Who here has the iPod connector fitted to their R? Is it worth it? Do you have control over the tracks from your steering controls? Sound quality? What info pops on the radio screen? Just got lots of questions as I want to have it installed but it is rather expensive here in South Africa, as in it costs more than a 60GB Photo Ipod. Also, after removing the radio units from the R's, do they go back in nicely with no rattles and squeaks and are the trims around the dash and radio prone to been marked when the dealer does this? As you can see, I am rather finnicky about my baby.

I've been thinking about doing this. Can I do this with an XM radio also installed?

Here in SA, we can only get thru Volvo,\if we try bring the IPD one we will get wacked at customs and the article ends uo costing us more than the Volvo one. Volvo wont supply the adaptor to the public unfitted in this country...............go figure............they reckon 3 hours labour to install..............

Re: iPod Connector in the R (CyberRacer)

Yeah, I've got the Volvo i-Pod adapter. It works pretty well and the sound quality is very good (as long as your mp3's are good quality). You can scroll through the tracks with the steering controls but you can't switch playlists with the radio controls. No info is displayed on the radio. I believe they remove the center console to install the adapter and they have to run a wire from the truck to the adapter I think.
I've got the video i-pod and sometimes after I plug it in I can't access the menus. Usually if I let it sit for awhile it'll unlock itself so I can select a playlist. Also, the screen is supposed to display Volvo for Life when you plug it in but mine doesn't. I think that only works with the older style i-pods. I'm happy with it though.

i just installed mine yesterday.
yes you have control via the steering wheel. the only thing is that the song titles dont show up but who cares.
if your mp3 is 192kbit quality, then so is the sound coming out of the speaker.
sorry that you missed the group buy. i had details posted across every forum on this board for two weeks.
I have it in my car..got it from IPD..It's awesome, still use steering wheels controls, sound quality is excellent....and it will still allow full function of the Ipod by hand when connected (alot of interfaces disable the Ipod and display their logo on the screen)

I'm not exactly sure, but there IS an Aux. RCA Input Jack on the interface so you will be able to hook up another "music source". Not sure if you will still have steering wheel controls though.

Re: (phuz)

I'm waiting for Mr Ed to finish his iPod adapter. Until then, I have the Volvo adapter in my V70R and I love it.
http://forums.swedespeed.com/z...age=1

Re: (CyberRacer)

If the IPD unit is not a whole lot more money getting it through customs in South Africa it may be worth it to you.
1. It does not blank the screen on the iPOD so you see the normal screen data.
2. It does provide an additional AUX input via analog RCA jacks for future use.
If you are forced to go with the Volvo one, and it sounds like you may be, make sure they order the right unit for yur car. Does your window sticker state Satellite Prepared, and/or do you have Navigation? Make sure they ask these questions or they may not be ordering the right interface cable.
Also make sure they do not order something for the XC-90 as it is an FM modulator, and would not provide the desired sound fidelity.
I believe a 3 hour charge is excessive, and they may assume more work is required than there really is. It should be easy on your 2006. They will need to pull the head unit, but that can be done and reinstalled easily without damage.

Re: (soledoc)

FYI - my V70R has been at the local dealer all week trying to eliminate an alternator noise (whine) problem that started when I added the Volvo iPod adapter to my car which already had factory Nav and Sirius. I know this combination has been a problem. They have spent a considerable amount of time on it, along with a factory tech, and have not succeeded. Right now the Sirius module has been bypassed so I can listen to my iPod w/out the noise until they solve the problem.

Re: (JHB)

I only have the 850 head unit with the premium dobly prolog II sound package. (The only options on our R's here in South Africa are the color and whether you want the 18" pegs) otherwise our cars come with the heated seats and everything else save the nav, tv and sirus radio which are not available here in South Africa. So, in summary, thanks for the replie & suggestions guys, I will be having the Volvo iPod connector installed hopefully this Friday, depending on whether they have stock here or have to order from Sweden.

Hold out for the iPod adapter from mrg_Ed - the difference is worth it. You get choices no other adapter offers.
