IPD upgrade to 2001 V70 T5 Geartronic?

I am wondering if anyone here has experience with the IPD ME7 upgrade to their 01 V70 T5 Geartonic? I am considering this upgrade to mine, along with the exhaust, but I am not sure if the transmission will be able to deal with the exra torque. Any input would be appreciated

Re: IPD upgrade to 2001 V70 T5 Geartronic? (TM)

My real honest opinion about this setup is that, using RICA tuning, the experience may vary.
Because of the slip on the converter some people have the impression that the tuning didn't do much.
There really is a difference but most difference is at the high RPM area.
As long as the lockup isn't engaged it's difficult to tell if it really made a difference because most of the time you are driving in an RPM range where the AT/GT is telling the engine how much power should be used so to speak.
The torque converter doesn't change so under certain circumstances the excessive torque will be wasted.
With my V70T5 GT I was disappointed about the power "feel" but the car was faster without a doubt.

Re: IPD upgrade to 2001 V70 T5 Geartronic? (TM)

One word YES!!!!
Read my story!!!!!!!
I have a auto tranny. I think the dealer told me its the Geartronic 5 speed.
I took the plunge this week (9/13/02) and just got my ECU upgraded from IPD. I got the special tool on Wednesday and I am NO mechanic.
I did get the ECU out easily enough, but I thought before I send it I should see how it all goes back together. Past experiences have taught me that. It was a pain until I saw how the thing worked, and then it was easy. I also labeled the ECU with my name, address, the kind of car I have and more importantly the vin# just to be sure.
Then after I was positive I could get it back into my car and everything else was done I sent it via FedEx up to Portland to IPD. Was I nervous!!!! I kept tracking the package until it was received worried someone would misplace it or lose it. I got an email from their system telling me what was going on. I did call them at some point during the day too make sure the ECU would be sent overnight and Scott said that’s the only way they send them out. And to have them ship my exhaust system as well. In their catalog it shows a dual tip exhaust and I wanted a single tip so my car looks like nothing happened to it. Scott had Fred make me a single tip special for me. Otherwise I would have had to wait.
I got the tracking number in the late afternoon and watched it until I went to bed. My ECU made its way to me by 10:45am Friday morning. I was SOOOO exited. Like a kid at Christmas….he he he he. It was great!!!!
It went into the car in seconds. I fired it up and took it for a spin. We have this hill here in Orange County that I took it up after I got it good and warmed up. I was about 5 or 6 cars behind this silver Beemer 330 racing up the hill. I was just watching him waiting for my break. Traffic opened up and I got into the throttle a bit and caught him quick. I sat on his bumper in the right lane (he was in the left lane) I could hear him footing it hard. After I was convinced that was all he could do I mashed the pedal down and blew by him like he was in reverse. I did see him shake his head in my mirror. The motor really came to life in the bottom of third at approx 50 mph…..wow!!!!!!....he he he he.
The car just performs the way it should. It down shifts quicker. The turbo reacts quicker too. You can really feel it when you are rolling along at like 50 and you are in third and get on it. The boost really spools up and you really accelerate hard and it pushes you back into those comfy Volvo seats. It’s very smooth and electric like. It’s easier to drive than it was earlier this week.
The guys at IPD (Scott, Tim and Fred) are awesome. It’s nice to do business with a company that treats people as well as they do. Everything went like they advertise on there site and there catalogs.
Heres a description of the power delivery in my 2001 C70 HPT Se.
From a stop it’s too got too much power to floor it. The traction light STAYS on solid. It never stayed on solid before it used to blink rapidly. So you gotta take it kind of easy off the line. Let it get into 2nd and if you need to then you can floor it. You will really feel the boost push you into the seats hard. The motor will sing to about 6000+ rpm’s then it shifts a bit hard but crisp and again the car is in its second wind something fierce (the turbo compressor must really be hustling), by now you’re doing at least 75-80mph. The faster you push it the faster the car makes you believe it will go. It’s very deceiving and very enjoyable. On the freeway at cruising speed it’s very easy to drive. Just like normal. Need to go fast, no problemo just hang on to the wheel and press the accelerator down and let the turbo catch up and do the work. It always has MORE power to give you. I can’t wait until I get the exhaust on it next week. Its very smooth and normal sounding. Just A LOT more power is the main difference. From what I know about cars which is not a lot. It seems the turbo is doing more work than it did before. And that’s fine with me. What a RUSH!!!!
2 days after I got the ECU in my car. I had still not really explored how it has changed my car. I was coming down the 57 fwy last night 9/14/02 doing approx 75 or so up a mild incline. This Acura CL or TL goes past my pretty good. I say to myself I might as well see what this is all about and just pushed the pedal down a bit. Not to the floor mind you. I got up to 90 and caught the Acura then the race was on and we both knew it. He was in the fast lane and I was next to him and there was no one else on the road. We got up to approx 110-115 and I was still tailing him a bit and he stayed at that speed for some time. My motor was only spinning about 3,000 rpm’s and I wanted to find out how much more it had left. So I really layed into the throttle. The car surged forward with authority. I glanced at the speedo and I was doing 130+, the fastest I had ever been in the Volvo. I glanced in my mirror and could see the Acura getting smaller. My car still had more to give. I didn’t find out how much more and slowed it down to a more normal speed again….whew. My heart was racing!!!! The Acura caught up and just stayed right behind me not even trying to catch up with me. Oh yeah!!!!
At 130+ the car was very smooth feeling. Yeah you know your really moving along and the car handles nice and calmly.
I got my sport exhaust installed 9/19/02. What an easy installation it was. I had it done at a local Volvo shop. After they removed the old exhaust piece in one piece. The new one went in about a half an hour. Really I watched them do the work!!!! Just like the IPD catalog says it does have a VERY low rumble to it and that’s about it. It’s a very nice looking system??? Why do they (TME) make such good looking mufflers???? Wow!!!!! The tip is awesome looking!!!! The cars performance has changed just a bit. There’s a bit less low end grunt. This is fine with me. I don’t like burning up my Pirelli’s!!!! There’s a much bigger surge of power when the turbo hits and you are in the throttle hard. Loads of top end 4,000 rpm plus!!!! It really breathes. Not a lot of noise at any speed. Looks fairly stock too.
I raced a white Mustang GT tonight. He screwed with me on the earlier light. So I was ready for him the next one. He got me off the line for about 100-150 feet while I got it into 2nd and got the turbo spooled up, once that happened the tires busted loose and I caught him in a second or two and that was that. At the next light we rolled our windows down and he asked me to stop in the parking lot to chat. I did and he asked me what kind of car this is. I told him it’s just a Volvo C70. He noticed the exhaust tip and asked what I had done to it. I only told him that I put an exhaust system on it….he he he he. He asked how much power I had. I told him almost 300. Out of a 5 cylinder!!!! He almost choked!!!!! He wanted to see under the hood. I popped the hood for him and he was dumbfounded. I said what was wrong. He said that his GT got beat by a damn 5 cylinder Volvo!!!! He had those Pep Boys sticker flames on the side of his car. I said he might want to take them off….he he he he
That made all my effort and worrying worth it!!!!!!
I have had the upgrade now about a month or so. Its 10/16/02 today. I was coming off the freeway the other night. This guy in this 528 i wanted to play a little. We lined up on a light and he caught me off guard. I had to get my turbo up to speed for the next light. He only got me by a few feet. We lined up at the next light and I was ready this time. Our windows were down. I got a nice launch of the light with no wheel spin. I turned off the STC for this race. Once we got off the light 100 feet and into 2nd the car really exploded with some serious boost and I was gone!!!!!!!! I blew his doors off. Anyways we went into a parking lot to a coffee shop and talked cars for awhile. He couldn’t believe he was smoked by a Volvo.
The cool part is this. No motor work is involved at all in these mods and that it’s a Volvo. Not many people think these cars are fast especially here in Southern Ca where Beemers and Mercedes are a dime a dozen. It’s a very stealthy car and that’s what’s best. Before the upgrade the car always could hold its own with cars in the same class (BMW 3 series, Merc CLK’s and E classes, Acura’s, Nissans, and most Mustangs except the Cobras), but now they wont be able to touch me. And the car doesn’t even break a sweat.
If your thinking about doing the upgrade to your car. Do it. You will be surprised at how your Volvo will transform into a wonderful performing machine.
Oh yeah!!!!!!!!

The person who told you that is wrong. Geartronic is Volvo's term for their "Automanual" transmission, in which you are able to shift up/down without a clutch.
What you have in your car is pretty much the same 5-speed automatic with adaptive learning, except without the "automanual" function made by Aisin Warner.
I hope that clears things up.
-Drew

Re: IPD upgrade to 2001 V70 T5 Geartronic? ([email protected])

Thanks alot for helping figure out what I have under my hood.
The tranny type was mentioned by the tech at the dealer last week when I inquired about changing the tranny fluid. He told me that in the Geartronic (which I now know is the wrong tranny) the fluid is extremely expensive. I was quoted $300 for just the fluid, so now I am looking for the fluid somewhere besides the dealer. The fluid is fine right now. I just wanted it double checked.
