Apparently the people that owned my 91 240 broke the shifter cover box to get to the shift lockout so I am wanting to replace it (beyond repair, broken plastic, cannot be screwed on and moves with shifter) with a new one I just got... but how do I get the old one off and the new one on? I looked and looked but couldn't see where the top of the gearshift would come off
anyone done this before?

Re: interior replacing gearshift cover (obdh)

The knob is not removable. It is manufactured as a unit with the lever. You must remove the entire lever to replace the lock-out and cover. This requires access under the car so be careful. While underneath be sure the shift linkage and bushings are ok as this is the time to install new stuff if needed. Be sure the lock-out/no-start switch/mechanism at the brake pedal is functioning as this affects the shift lever also.
George Dill
