Sorry if this is a old topic, am new to this site. Dealer wants about $900 to install trailer hitch on 2003 xc70 AWD. Aftermarket products cost less than $200. Would it be a mistake to purchase a Class II hitch on line and install myself? Have looked under car and can't say it obvious where one would bolt in. Anyone have a picture? Also, where is exit point for wiring harness from electrical adapter at rear to undercarriage?
Thanks.

The Volvo hitch is a very nice, well-designed unit. Does the price include the wiring harness? The hitch should be about $350; the harness about $125; if so, the dealer wants about $400 for about 1.5 to 2 hours labour at most.
For the price difference I would buy a class 2 aftermarket unit. It will come with instructions. It is a bolt on affair because the car is designed to accommodate a hitch; you may need to lower the tailpipe/muffler to get the bolts in on the left side.
The Volvo hitch includes a bracket to attach the wiring harness to. The aftermarket hitch will not. The harness will normally exit the car through a rubber plug in the bottom of the spare tire well. However, I would recommend keeping it inside the spare tire well and running it out under the tailgate when you need it.
