Alright everyone:
I have an Optima battery that I am trying to install in my car. My problem is that the 90 degree bend in the battery terminals at the end of the cables will not clear the edge of the battery. I.e. they won't reach the post.
I was planning on replacing these terminals and realized that if I do, I may be cutting the positive cable from the starter too short. Then I thought, well why not just replace that cable with a longer one. After looking at the following Volvo Diagrams I realized that the cable from the starter is the same cable that goes to the alternator and I am getting in over my head and more than I want to send.
Volvo Ignition Diagram

Volvo Ignition Components

I have a couple of questions. Is there any disadvantage to replacing the terminals with side-post mount that screw into the threads on the side of the battery? What type of terminals would you guys recommend as replacements for the OEM terminals? If the Side-mount are not recommended, can I extend the cable somehow? Am I reading the ignition diagram wrong? Is it one cable from the alternato to the starter to the battery? Is there a lead in the middle of the cable somewhere?
I know it is alot of questions, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advacne. Again if you would like to see larger photos please go here.
Have you tried to trace the positive wire? That'll prove if it's one cable or not.
Which Optima did you go with? Yellow Top? Orange top? Did you make sure the battery fits in properly with the proper terminal orientation?
I have a Yellow top in mine but had reversed terminal orientation. So we had to extend the positive and negative wiring plus custom fit a bracket to hold the battery down in place.

Ron

Ron:
My battery looks exactly the one you have, only it is a red top. I am having the same exact problem you had. Only I don't think I need to extend all of my cables. Only the positive cable to the starter. I think the rest have sufficient length to be re-routed.

I haven't tried tracing the positive wire much. I looked to see where it was going, but I lost when it turned towards the block. I will take another look tonight.
After I looked at the Volvo diagrams above, it seems to me that the positive cable coming from the starter to the battery is the same cable that is going to the alternator. It seems to be one cable all the way through with a lead at one end and in the middle. And then a battery terminal at the other end. That would explain the $300 price tag. Is my assumption correct or is it actually two cables. I am a beginner adn I don't know if I am reading that diagram correctly.
Are those OEM terminals you have or did you get them from a parts store? Do you happen to know what kind they are or where you got them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I unfortunately can not read wiring diagrams or I would've been able to help you out with that.
Those terminals are not OEM. I had a stereo shop install the battery (among my CellPort and stereo system). I do not remember the brand but it was something they touted as being used by the Military. Give CarTunes a call, 617-923-1490. I'm sure they'll be able to help you out. Just tell them Ron with the Red Passat in Boston sent you over.
They might be able to help you out in the positive line. Talk to Jonah (an installer) or Andrew (sales/installer) about that.
Ron
