Looks great there Larry. I'm sure you can paint the hats later (just need to scrub all that rust off). Just a note, I have cross-drilled Zimmerman rotors on my Passat and have noticed that all the holes are currently filled with brake dust. It hasn't decreased any performance in dry weather, only in wet as the rain builds up on the rotor and has no where to go. Possibly painting the holes would lessen brake dust accumulation in there.
RJ

Re: Installed 302mm brakes (B518T)

Did u have to buy the whole 302mm upgrade kit from ipd? I didn't know u could buy just the brackets, I thought u needed to buy the whole kit? I was wondering because I want 302mm aftermarket drilled and slotted Brembos, but I don't want to buy an entire kit then not use the supplied rotors. How did u do it?

I believe he got the brackets from them before they were offered as a whole kit, so it was some time ago.
Btw, you can get the Volvo OEM 302mm brackets if you don't want to take the whole kit route.

quote:
I believe he got the brackets from them before they were offered as a whole kit, so it was some time ago.

Yeah, what he said. Also good luck getting drilled and slotted Brembo's for the 302mm kit. I spoke with Brembo directly and they told me they do not make any rotors that size. Neither drilled nor OEM replacement. You can get Brembo rotors drilled for the rear, but they won't be drilled by Brembo. The only drilled and or slotted rotors for the 302mm application I think are from KVR Performance, Zimmerman (EuroSport Tuning), or TarOx.

Larry, does Brembo offer a kit larger than 302mm for the V70r?
I see a red x for each photo.
Re: Installed 302mm brakes (ReneNL)

Brembo does make a big brake kit that will work on our cars. It is huge money. Don't know the exact sizes, but you will definitely need at least 17" wheels. Kai has them on his C70 and Steve_s has them on his 850.
Brembo does NOT make a 302mm rotor for our cars period. They make the 280mm though. I went with the TarOx rotors. You can also go with the Zimmerman front rotors from EuroSport Tuning. If I am not mistaken their kit includes Zimmerman front rotors and Brembo rear rotors drilled, slotted, & cadmium plated by KVR.
Here are the pics.

Part # 8602456 I got mine for $68.80 each through Volvo of Houston.
281-721-1600, ask for Rachel. They'll have to order them but it only takes a few days for them to get it in!

Re: Installed 302mm brakes (gdogg16)

Thanks Greg.
Yeah I got them from a guy named Mark Hannaford in the UK. Shoot me an e-mail and I'll send you his info. I would definitely paint the rotor hats when you get them. Otherwise they will rust. Look at the photo of the rear rotor. The part number for the bracket is in the sticky on the top of the forum that lists part numbers. I would check your stock rotors though. I thought the 99's came with the 302mm rotors standard. Finally if you do go with the TarOx it will take a while becuase TarOx does not officially make a rear rotor for the AWD cars. Mine are somewhat custom, but it was something that they offered me, so I don't think it is very tough for them to do. I have not had any problems except for a bad squealing from the front when I first installed the rotors with TarOx pads. I have since changed them out for OEM (I had OEm in the back from the get go, so I know have OEM all the way around) and have not a squeal since. Hope this helps.

Re: Installed 302mm brakes (Red Rocket)

Hey Ananda:
Do you have slotted rotors on all 4 corners? Do you have the 302mm rotors in the front? Where did you get them? I am thinking I may change my rotors to slotted next time I need new pads. Seem to get a slight vibration when stopping at high speeds and think that slotted rotors may help me a little bit. What do you think of the slotted rotors? Had any problems with them? Where they an improvement?

Hi folks!
The technical information is great and the pictures look sharp but lets get down to the important info... What's the price break down to convert?
Cheers,
Paul

Re: Installed 302mm brakes (larryo108)

I still have my weenie 280's on, and aam in the process of the 302 upgrade. I have the brackets and pads but still need rotors.
Here's my price breakdown:
Brace (caliper brackets) $147.60 w/S&H from Volvo of Houston
New Caliper Bolts $2.00
Anti-Squeel paste (Anti - yeah right) $6.00
Textar pads $35 from FCP (PBR's same price)
4 Zinc plated CD/Slotted rotors 302 zimms up front, normal back $280 w/S&H from Race Concepts. I think fronts only are $170?
So all 4 for under $500
If I did just the fronts, since my backs aren't zinc coated, would just get some 'normal' 302 C/D zimm's to match the rust (even if painted) $110 (FCP) so = $300
I'm still debating about C/D and slotted or just normal. I got slotted before because I didn't want to be too showey, I don't really need C/D going to work and back. And honestly I can't really tell much of a diff with the slotted, just that it looks a little different than stock. I have a funny vibration every now and then, it seems like its in the front now, maybe the dreaded "cement" deposits on the rotor. It only happens when they are warm. Not sure if slotted is to blame for it, if the slots slice a bit of the pad off, where does it go?? On the rotor?? But becasue of it I may just go 'normal' next time. My wifes 'normal' brembo's have been trouble free.
>>"I have a funny vibration every now and then.."<<
when braking? what you describe is a classic warped rotor symptom.

check the torque on your wheel bolts.
improper torque sequencing of the wheel bolts (and check again after driving ~50 miles) is the most common cause of warped rotors.
if you install cross-drilled rotors be sure to bed-in and heat-cycle them as per the supplied instructions. you should do this any time you do a brake job but it is especially critical with drilled rotors.
