Necessary parts:

Lamp - Part number 30790449 from volvo $27.00 List price

Wire tap connectors - Available at any electronics or hardware store.

Receptacle housing - Part number 30682794 from volvo $7.09 List price

Repair Terminal - Part number 30656639 from volvo $1.35 List Price

Procedure:

You'll need to remove the door panel which is simple. There are two screws behind a cover in the grab handle area. Once they are removed, the whole panel just pulls off. It's held on with clips.

Once inside, you'll need to locate the wiring for the door lock switch. Using the wire tap connectors, use the two outer wires on the harness to hook up the LED lamp. It is pin 1 and 4 on the harness. The wire colors vary by year.

Then plug the lamp into the diffuser which is already in place in the door handle area. That's it. You're done!

How'd you get the covers off the access the screws? I've only removed one, on my rear passenger door, and it broke in the process.

Thanks for posting though! I'm glad it's relatively simple once the necessary parts are gathered. If you figure out the rest of the needed parts numbers I'll have to give this a try. How's the brightness? It looks pretty dim from the picture you posted and I'm curious about whether that's full brightness like the original setup or if it's dimmer as mentioned in that Swedish thread you posted. I think I may try the foil trick if I do this to see if I can get some more light output.

I haven't seen a factory fitted one in person, however it's just as bright as the door handle lights were in my Audi A6. I'm not sure how they could be made any brighter as they're receiving full voltage with the dimmer at its brightest setting.

That's awesome to hear. I hope you figure out the other part numbers because this seems far easier than my attempt at picking out the proper harnesses.

Did you have to remove the speaker cover for the tweeters near the a-pillar before removing the front door panels? I feel like that is part of the process but I don't remember.

No, I didn't have to remove the cover with the tweeter and BLIS indicator. It's very possible to "sneak" the door panel in and out under it.

You wouldn't happen to know what type of harness the connector came off of would you? I'm looking at different part sites and I'm wondering if the little connecter even has a part number or if it's only part of other harnesses. I've been looking at eBay auctions to see if any of the harnesses have a matching connector but none of them appear to have a connector small enough to fit into the lamp.

I guess the other option is trying to directly wire it together. I could open up the lamp and solder two wires in there and then follow everything else you posted. I don't know if the connector does anything else other than make it plug and play. I'm assuming polarity matters so it would be really annoying to hook it all up, including the wire tap connectors, and have to switch it around.

It was actually from the original center console harness that was in my car. The RSE system includes an entirely different center console harness from the front to the back. The plug that was used was the one that I mentioned in a previous thread that is taped up and unused. It is the plug that would be used for the cup holder illumination. It seems that this plug is used throughout the car for all of these sorts of things.

Something else that I discovered: There is supposed to be lighting in the door pocket as well (on the executive models). I'll see if I can figure out how that works.

I've seen the door pocket lighting in an older thread but unlike the door handles there aren't lenses down near the door pockets. I'm assuming they use the same lamps so I don't know if it requires cutting of the door panel to install a lens. The additional ambient lighting would be nice though. I'm taking my car in for service tomorrow but my assumption is that they won't have a clue about the connector that fits into the lamp and will just ask for a VIN for an executive model and suggest buying the entire harness. Looks like I may be going the soldering route!

The first post has been updated with the part number for the harness connector. It was NOT easy to find that thing in the parts catalog!

Also, the door pocket lights are, in fact, a different part. It is the same style light as is used in the newer models with the footwell ambient lighting. I will order one and see what it looks like exactly. I am not sure where they go exactly, but my door panels do have a cutout above the door pockets, below the window switches.

Awesome! I'll have to order the parts tonight for my four doors and hopefully find a warm place to do the install. Thanks for finding that part number!

I'll have to look at my car again to see if I recognize the cutout you're talking about. I don't remember seeing one before.

What is so ironic or pure coincidence is that I just did the EXACT same thing today on my S80 and I never saw this thread. I actually came on to describe how to do it, but looks like its well documented!

I actually used the LEDs from oznium.com (http://www.oznium.com/prewired-surface-mount-led), its actually brighter than stock, but not enough to distract me at night. I just used electrical tape to tape it down to the lens.

This cool white. I used some warm whites to light up my trunk as well (tapped into the wiring for the existing trunk light.

The color and brightness of using the cool white LEDs matches pretty nicely with the gauges. Yes, that is a R-Design steering wheel on my S80.

As for what I did with the warm white LEDs:

Tapped to the existing trunk light circuit. Nothing special at all.

My 2012 S80 came with door handle lights and the light output is quite similar to the image posted by itwontstopsnowin. I'd say the factory installed footwell lights are brighter than the door handle lights. There is also a light in the open recess behind the center stack.

Could you please post a picture of the actual light element behind the center stack?

All S80s have the center stack light. It's just uselessly dim, just like the overhead LEDs. The only time I can actually see mine is if I crank my neck to the side or put my hand back there.

From the sides it's just a very faint glow:

From head on you can't see anything:

And these are the useless overhead ambient lights. I had my car for several months before i realized they were even there:

Granted, I had an S60 as a loaner and the center stack light was brighter so perhaps the newer S80s have the brighter light as well. I find it strange that the door handle, map pocket and cup holder lights are a different color than the overhead and center stack lights.

Kelvin6, your lights look great! If the stock bulbs turn out to be too dim I'll give those a try!

I checked my car out and there is a hole under the window switches but I'm pretty sure that's not where the light comes out. There was an old thread on here awhile ago where someone posted the pictures of their ambient lighting in the executive model and I think the lighting was coming from farther back in the door panel, toward the rear of the car, sort of angled toward the gas pedal if that makes any sense. It'll be interesting to see what the part looks like.

If you look at the thread I started two years ago (on 01-04-11) I put pictures of the interior lighting on my UK spec Executive S80. Shows door handle and pocket lights. Hope this helps.
