Hello to All:

Does anyone have information on the release date for the S60r. I'm trying to decide between an Audi S4 and the S60r. I'd rather get the S60r, but if it's not going to be released until next summer, I might not be able to wait. Any other information that you have on the S60r would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Ok, that's fine, but WHAT is an S60r?! It that a T5 with the 300 hp powerplant? What are the differences in the suspension, if any, over the T5's optional sport chassis? Is the S60r any lighter than the T5?

Wow..you are a bit behind. No worry, check out Swedespeed's news section...I think George has an extensive write up about this.
I think Volvospy also has it.

That tells me squat. I went back to the news section and the January '01 link to the S60r has since died. So what is it?

The S60 PCC (Performance Concept Car) is basically a conceptualized form of what the production S60R will become. It will feature a 2.4 liter turbocharged inline-5 with 300 horsepower, Haldex AWD, and active-suspension. This suspension system is totally different than the T5. The S60 PCC suspension has active dampers that can change the level of firm-ness instantanously depending on conditions. It has 3 different settings that function with the Haldex AWD system. I hope that this helps! You can read more at the link below:

Oh, thanks Drew. Sorry I was so snippy, by the time I tried to find the article and discovered the link had died I was getting a tad peeved.

Wow, it looks like if Volvo charges anything less than $45k to $50k for the S60r we'd be lucky. The AWD and active suspension will surely drive the price up. Plus with my luck they'd include the sunroof as standard which would leave me out of the running. (I don't fit into the sunroof-equipped units.)

Alack and alas, my T5 has only 5800 miles on it and is only 1/2 paid for, so I won't be able to justify a new car quite yet. I might have to just get the chip kit from Steffanson and bump up my hp to 300 and leave it at that until I could afford an S60r in 10 years.

Sigh. Sure woulda been sweet, tho. Oh well, I guess I'll just justify the decison not to buy it on the fact I'm waiting for the bugs to get worked out of the system before I plunge in. Should be all set and working fine in 10 years, right?

Um, it IS a word. From Webster's 10th:

squat n 5 slang: DIDDLY-SQUAT

diddly-squat \-,skwat\n slang [prob. alter. of doodly-squat] (1974): the least amount : anything at all <didn't know ~ about sports -- Sam Toperoff>

Which link isn't working?

Perhaps you can order it without a sunroof, a sunroof delete if you will. I know you can do that on the S4, but it's a special order thing that takes months, unless there's one in allocation which is very rare.

If I were you I'd wait. The S60 should be out by next spring with better brakes and suspension, not to mention 300hp. The current S4 is about to get replaced anyway (within a year probably).

Im with you on this Pete,
I have a S60 T5 right now and I want a S60R or a S4 as well. I have heard that they S60R may be out next summer but we will have to wait and see. I have also read that the next S4(may be a coupe) may be powered by a V8 to blow the M3 away. I went to a local Audi dealership and looked at the new A4 and I must say that is a good looking car inside and out for about 38k you can get a fully loaded A4 3.0 V6/ 6spd man/awd/Nav/HID/ect......
I think its a good deal for a great car.

I agree the 2002 A4 is a pretty nice car but listen to this. I currently lease an A4 that has about 3 months left (It's a 1999 A4 1.8T, leather, Quattro, etc) which I've loved since day 1. I just ordered a 2002 Silver T5 S60, 5 speed, 17" tethys, leather sport seats, sunroof, yada yada yada. I was also considering the new A4 so I went to my Audi dealer to price one up which was comparable to the T5 I ordered (2002 A4, 3.0, 5 speed, leather, winter package, bose system, basically everything but navigation and sport suspension). The sticker on both cars (T5 and A4) came out to about $37,500. Can you believe that for a 39 month lease, with 12k miles per year, my Audi dealer wanted $569/month!!! I asked them if they had been smoking crack that morning. I am getting the loaded up 2002 T5 for a 36 month lease (not 39) with 12k miles a year for $469/month. One hundred dollars less a month for a car that in my opinion is more comfortable, drives just as smooth if not smoother and is much faster than the 3.0 A4 (220 HP I believe for the 3.0). The only thing the A4 had over the T5 is Quattro which doesn't even come close to warrant another $100 a month.

I take delivery of my T5 toward the end of this year, can't wait! I loved the automatic that I test drove (the dealer didn't have any 5 speeds).

That doesn't make much sense, unless the interest rate was crap, or the resale on teh car, and I think the A4's resale is pretty good.

The A4 is nice, but it's smaller than the S60 it seems, even in the newer form.

I heard they might do a range of S4s, (wagon, coupe, sedan and maybe even convertible).

That's what we need, a C60 Convertible.

George, on the Swedespeed News archive, the January 17, 2001 article on the S60r has a link http://www.swedespeed.com/news/01_01/01_17_01/index.shtml which is "Not found" at least by my machine.

I'd hope the sunroof delete option would be available, otherwise I won't be a volvo customer in the future. I don't think the delete option is in the system right now because there are so many S60 models that they want to standardize the production run to make things cheaper (When I was on the factory tour in Goteborg they said the S80 had 60 different part numbers of steering wheel alone.) By making all the cars with the same equipment you can eliminate confusion on the production line and keep things cheaper.

Unfortunately that means I can't fit into the car so I can't buy one. Plus, my allergies kick up in spring and fall (which are about the only times the sunroof would be open, anyway, so it has to stay shut to keep the pollen out and into that nice pollen filter in the IAQS) Also, I'd think that the pure-performance driver wouldn't want the extra weight of the sunroof slowing down his launch times (OK, it's only the weight of the motor and some brackets, but it's extra weight nonetheless.)

I guess I'm just an oddball on this one, but I really do hate the things.

George, has anyone you know of put in an ECU mod in a USA version of the T5? I noticed Steffansson at http://www.samsteffansson.se/samindex.html has one for only $650 but I have no idea if it'd work in a US-spec ECU.

I'd think that any ECU-modifier that could get an endorsement on this site would jump at the chance to make some $$$. Is anyone interested in seeing if we can get a group buy on ECU mod kits?

PUAHAHAHAHAA....LOL and falling off my chair~~! Yeah...I thought they looked weird, but couldn't quite get the right word to describe it. I think those grille at the lower air dam gotta go.....and I can live with full body color side skirt. Maybe more rounded exhaust tip. Those look like old Pontiac Grand Prix tips...

Don't worry guys, the front end of the S60R/V70R is going to look more like the pictures below, without the mesh inserts. These are spy pictures of the actual cars testing in Death Valley, there is no mesh.

Yeah, I saw those two pictures, too...but they seem almost a bit too 'spy-photo' like. Not sure if they will keep it that way....

Some did say they look a bit too M3/5 like, but you won't hear me complaining. If they can have the same bodykit like the blue one, but everything painted body color...and that gront bumper...that thing will be one sweet ride.

Not sure how people are going to live with 19 inch, though. Most of the R owners already have hard time keeping their 17s true, how is a regular soccer mom going to keep up with that?
