Inaccurate External Temperature Gauge

My apologies if this has been addressed, but i searched and could not find a discussion on this.

I have noticed that the gauge has been wildly inaccurate - today reading 67 Fahrenheit and it was in the 80s. As this has really been the only issue on the car (save the slow leak I have in a tire from a screw stuck 1/2 way in the left rear) in five months of ownership - I will likely not bring it in until my oil change at the end of the year. But I seem to recall hearing or reading that a faulty sensor could impact other systems (ie. air conditioning or engine cooling) Has anyone experienced this? Is there a quick re-set? Should I be concerned or can it wait til my first service/oil change.

Thanks

The ambient sensor is bad. Just had ours replaced. It is located on the passenger mirror. It affects many things in the vehicle. Needs replaced. For example, if it is 85 degrees and you have the climate set to Auto at 77 degrees, and the sensor then reads 54 degrees, like ours, the heat turns on inside and it gets warm quickly. We have a T8 and we noticed the battery preconditioning ran unusually long when the sensor was acting up.

It's not a reliable location for a temperature sensor, at least for hot weather. My XC60 reads consistently around 8 degrees F warm when it's sunny.

just 8? When left in the sun, mine can be off by 20 deg. It said 102 one time when it was 83ish. Even after driving for 30 minutes, it was still at 95.

@Azikk exactly correct. Had to take ours back to the dealer today. I noticed the temp was 6-7 hotter than actual. I got a loaner XC90 and it was 8 degrees hotter. But, when parked in the garage or shade it is correct. But, compared to the bad sensor that would oscillate between actual temp and 51 degrees, it is at least close and stable and doesn't cause the heater to turn on when it is 85 degrees.

Glad you brought this up as I thought the temperature was off sometimes. This might also explain some odd experiences with the climate control, heating when I didn't want it. As far as where the sensor is located, one of my vehicles had it behind the front bumper so always read high in the summer because ti was too close to the pavement.

temperature control problems

I am interested to see what others say about this problem. I have been having the opposite experience -- the temp gauge in my 2016 XC60 overstates the outside temperature by 10 degrees or more. It will read in the 90's when it's really 75 out. I don't know what will happen when we really hit 90 here with our high humidity.

I don't know if the inaccurate temperature sensor is the cause, but my A/C fan runs really loud and for long periods when I use the Automatic Climate Control setting. The inside temperature is not as warm as the climate control seems to think it is. I often turn the fan down manually to reduce the noise. It's frustrating because my 2005 XC70 worked better -- i just picked a temperature like 70 and left it there, never had to touch it, and it cooled the car down nicely, even without the extra tinting this car has.

I haven't been in for my first service yet. Just crossed 5000 miles. This problem is an annoyance that doesn't seem to merit a special service visit. But I'd like to know what's going on before I do make it in for that first service.

Same here, sensor often reads 10-20 above actual temperature on warmer days.
