In the middle of a tie rod job need advice ASAP

639 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Honkin'Max
I'm in the middle of replacing the inner tie rods and as I was undoing the nut on the tie rod ends the "shaft" started to turn! So now I can't get the nut off! I've tried holding it as I turn the nut, but the whole thing just spins. How can I get it off? Do I have to cut it? And if so with what?!

Please get back to me ASAP if you have any ideas

Shoot everthing with a rust penetrant.

Using a punch and hammer smack the nut toward the "tighten" direction then toward "loosen".

Using a pry bar or equivalent apply pressure to the tie rod near the end to cause tension on the joint. While doing this and using your third hand with a perfect-fit wrench on the nut turn either way to get the nut loose then remove.

Repeat as needed.

Thanks George,

The chisel worked well on the passenger side, but the divers side was a nightmare! I ended up have to use a hacksaw.

Thanks Again,
