Hi there!
I must say that this is an impressive site! Especially for me as a Swede living in Göteborg having the Volvo factory almost within walking distance from home.
It is a bit unusual to read about Volvo as an car for enthusiasts, here in Göteborg, as in most of Sweden, Volvo cars are "everywere - always"...
Example: There are a total of 10 parking spaces in the garage in the basement of the house I am living in, 6 of these spaces are occupied by Volvos :)
As i said, great site!
Best whises from the "Volvo home", Göteborg!
/Philip

Philip,
Welcome to Swedespeed! It is pretty neat that there are 6 Volvo cars in 10 parking spaces. I am sure that is something that you see everday.
It is really nice to have someone here from the Volvo home, Göteborg, Sweden. Someday I hope to visit Göteborg, when I am picking up a new Volvo through European Delivery.
Maybe you can help us out around here, on some Volvo things and teach us the Swedish language.
Again, welcome!
-Drew

Hah, yeah if you want to do any Swedish translation just let me know. I've got plenty of it and don't speak a word.
That said, Welcome! And thanks for the compliment. The site is only about 8 months old, and we're trying to build it out fully. There are still parts that need work, however its coming along.
So what is it like to live in the Volvo capital of the world. Besides the huge number of Volvos, do you see oddball and rare Volvo stuff as well? How about new and experimental Volvos?

If you need some help on Swedish i can help you of course, although i will not start translating whole books...
Just to let you know, i am not a Volvo driver myself, i drive a VW Golf, but that is also the reason why I found this site. I was surfing for VW sites and found your sistersite VWvortex, and from there i found a link here...
I am a student, but this summer i worked at Volvos main sparepart warehouse here in Göteborg. I packed spareparts for Volvo dealers mainly in Great Britan, but also to dealers in North America, so i hope you haven't got any thorn parts this summer... :)
Why im not a volvodriver? Well, then it would be 7 volvos out of 10 in my garage :) Driving a Volvo i Sweden, and especially in Göteborg is maybe a bit too "mainstream" for me... Now, the VW Golf isn't that unusual either, but still, compared to any kind of Volvo (or Saab!) it is a more personal choice.
So I think that I have chosen a car in the same whay as you, trying to find something that not everybody else drives!
Now, on to "oddball and rare Volvo stuff"...
Well of course you see alot of different volvos here, and the 240-740-940 models must be the most common car i Sweden.
But you can also see alot of more uncommon volvos like:
260 bertone coupé, 162, 780 bertone coupé, 850 t-5r both in yellow and red versions. S/V70 R AWD models in gold and blue colors. C70 is quite popular, 960/S/V90/S80 executive can also be found. Almost all Police cars are Volvo or Saab, almost all Ambulances are rebuilt Volvo V90s.
Most older Volvos can also bee seen, like Volvo PV 4XX(differnt numbers, i don't know them all). And the Volvo Amazon (now, i think it was called something else in america, but i don't remember what) and Volvo P1800.

Volvo are very good at keeping secrets, so you dont see that many experimantal volvos around, although a couple of years ago, before the S80 was launched a Black S70 that had a much broader wheelbase (i think that i the right word) than an ordinary S70 was driving around the city, probably it was a testing of the S80 platform.
Also new Volvos come to the streets quick, i have already seen 5-10 Volvo S60/V70 D5 (with the new diesel engine). The S60 has been very popular, and in just a year it has become quite common.
You can really say that this is THE Volvo City. Volvo cars everywere, Volvo busses, trucks, construction ecuipment, penta boat engines and so on...
Note: My english may not always be perfect, if there is something that you find odd or don't understand, just tell med and i will try to explain it again!
/Philip

Hey Phillip, welcome and welcome to Vortex as well. I own a Golf as well, and absolutely love the car. Thanks also for the insight on your home.
If you're interested in translation, I was curious about this...

Published: 30 August 2001, 09:00 CET

Tommy Brorsson ”Dark Horse” i Race of Champions KLART FÖR DRABBNING I ÅRETS RACE PÅ RING KNUTSTORP

STARTFÄLTET I RACE OF CHAMPIONS:
(Startnumren är lottade)

1. Daniel Haglöf
2. Stefan Söderberg
3. Rickard Rydell
4. Alain Menu
5. Peter Kox
6. Edward Sandström
7. Roberto Colciago
8. John Cleland
9. Lars-Åke Björk
10. Tommy Brorsson
11. Jan "Flash" Nilsson

I will give you a short resumé of the article:
"This Sunday, the most spectacular and prestigful race this year -Race Of Champions- will take place at Knutstorp ring in southern Sweden. Only the best known drivers will compete, such as Richard Rydell, Alain Menu, Roberto Colciagos and Janne ”Flash” Nilsson. Richard and Alain are favourites, but Tommy Brorsson who has won several european race titels throughout the 70:ths and 80:ths could act as a "Dark Horse".
The 11 drivers will all drive identic Volvo S60:s that have been havily modified for racing. A 265 bhp turbo engine is able to take the S60 around Knutstorp ring in about 1 minute 6 seconds, wich is faster than for example the cars driving in Ferrari 360 Challange. These S60:s will be used in the new racing class "Volvo S60 Challange" starting in Sweden next year.
Drivers staring in "Race of champions":
1. Daniel Haglöf
2. Stefan Söderberg
3. Rickard Rydell
4. Alain Menu
5. Peter Kox
6. Edward Sandström
7. Roberto Colciago
8. John Cleland
9. Lars-Åke Björk
10. Tommy Brorsson
11. Jan "Flash" Nilsson

Philip,
Wow, thanks for that translation! I didn't even know that Volvo was planning on doing such a race. I wish that I could see pictures of what those modified S60's looked like. That would make a great story. It sounds like the S60's will have their own races in Sweden next year. Very cool!
-Drew

Thanks, guys!
I always wanted to know the translation to that page!
However, are the Ferrari 360s really that slow?! I mean, I have a hard time believing a modified production car can outpace those vehicles on that track.
Then, again, I don't know much about the Ferrari 360. :)
regards,
MAJ

Philip,
I must say, as a Volvo fan (I have a '97 960, and a '01 V70 2.4T), and as an American, I was sad to see Volvo purchased by Ford. I know GM Ownes Saab and they've done a good job keeping their hands off, but I hope Ford can do the same. Because Americans can do a lot of things, and in many things, the best, however when it comes to making cars, Europe is where it's at. American car makers just know how to make a lot of money, they have a lot left to learn about design and style.
