It has been a very positive relationship so far.
The only problem I've had is the now somewhat infamous '06 no boost problem. Easy fix and certainly nothing that spoiled my feelings for the car. Hey, even the most reliable Japanese cars have issues from time to time.
The only thing I didn't like about this incident is that Volvo could tell their dealers to perform the software upload when the cars trickle in for service. Really stupid move on Volvo's part.
1 - gas mileage. I do a fair amount of highway mileage, so the car is currently stating 22.5 MPG as the overall average.
2 - Comfort vs Advanced Mode. I seem to be spending more time in Advanced lately. With the family in the car it is usually Comfort. It is a pretty radical difference between the two.
3 - Ipod installation. It is nice to have, but I get "alternator feedback" when I turn the sound up. Rather annoying while listening Handel's Water Music. Dealer says it is normal
I'll bring it up next time.
4 - Da Moose get all the attention. Of all the cars I've had not A one has turned more heads, the combination of Sonic Blue with yellow moose has a lot of folks taking a second look. A lot!
5 - Side hop. Uhh, well, it does feel a little like a 70 Camaro, but the car overall handles well. A little too much understeer, but overall pretty darn good.
6 - Excellent commuter car. Comfortable. Quiet. Good stereo and of course very good power.
7 - The car (or is it me?!?) is addicted to 100 octane. Just about every tank gets mixed with about 5-6 gallons. For those of you who don't do it, I would highely recommend it.
8 - Turning radius has become such a non-issue. The only time I frankly notice is when I drive a different car
9 - Leather is very soft, but even with my monthly treatment of Lexol, it does seem to show age fairly easily.
What would make the car perfect? More power is always good. More backseat leg room. There is just about nil sitting behind me. A true bi-xenox lamp system and slightly tighter handling and the car would be truly perfect. OK, that and a better seat memory system.
Big overall.

Re: Impressions after 13,000 miles and 9 months (flybynight)

Wow then it's been over 9 months since the Red Hook GTG. You were still waiting on it then.
WRT to:

Quote, originally posted by flybynight »

7 - The car (or is it me?!?) is addicted to 100 octane. I had 5 gallons worth of cracktane on hand but a gut check every now an then is good exercise.
On 92 only, shifting through the turbo lag and the launch bog were much more noticable. It was like punching through a wall of mud in each gear and off every light.
Upper RPMs were ragged, non-linear and inconsistent and power flattened out sooner in the upper range, and fuel economy was down .1-.3 mpg under very similar conditions.
Filled up with a blended tank yesterday and OH MAN it's good to have the rest of my car back!
I used to live in Fort Lee, NJ, but that before my need for 100 octane.
However, you can get 94 octane at various gas stations in the NE, so filling a full tank of 94 octane should be about the same.
I'd check with some of your fellow NJ/NY/CT R drivers for 100 octane if you wanna give it a try. Just make sure it isn't leaded!!
I apply the leather treatment roughly every month to ever month 1/2.
I recommend doing the same since the R leather is darn soft (makes me wanna drive naked!).

Nothing like a few blast at 140 MPH (legally!!!) to excercise the car.

Re: Impressions after 13,000 miles and 9 months (flybynight)

I was leaving the other day from work...95 degrees outside, 6000 ft elevation, a/c cranked and the car just pulled when I stepped on the gas. It actually surged forward for a split second so hard that it slammed me into the seat as I got over 3K. I've never seen it do that before even with 100 octane mixed in.
My only mods are BMC air filter and 93 octane...lighter rotors and wheels as well.
I really enjoy driving my car, though I can't wait for winter again

Re: Impressions after 13,000 miles and 9 months (flybynight)

Mine has calmed down a little after a flurry of annoying problems the first year (apart from the side hop when hitting potholed and other significant road irregularities ; the awful turning radius ; and the woeful mileage ).
Of course, now that I've come to really appreciate the car, we have a baby and my wife takes it over for baby shuttle duties.
I'm left with a temperamental 2005 VW Golf TDI, which gets great gas mileage, looks cool, runs on biodiesel blend, can haul stuff, but which has been in the shop 3 out of the 6 weeks I've owned it (including a new transmission at $16k miles ).
