I'm very tired of driving a Ford Explorer as my daily commuter (50 miles round trip) and am considering a C70 Coupe for commuting duties. I'd probably stick with an older one ('98 - '99) with about 35k to 45k miles, since prices in my area for cars like this are $18k to $24k.

Given the above, what advice can y'all share with me as I start my search? For example, what options are must haves? I love power, so should I not even consider the LT? Are there any problem areas to watch out for? Will maintenance costs make this a bad choice as a commuter?

Thanks in advance for the anticipated answers!

Hey Lucky,
Welcome to Swedespeed...hehee....we have another C70 member!! Or..potentially a C70 owner. http://********************/smile/emwink.gif So you are also in the hectic MD/VA/DC metor, eh? The prices you found are about right.
If I were you, I would probably look into an automatic tranny one. HPT is nice to have, got a bit of turbo lag at first, but nothing you can't get used to...or an ECU upgrade can do. http://********************/smile/emsmile.gif LPT is nice, too...a bit more friendly for city driving. Since I haven't put more than 17K miles on my 98, can't really tell you what else will go run for a 35K+ mile C70. But if long daily commute is what you are going to do, I'd definitely try to find one with the awesome Premium 12 speaker system. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif Or was it 10 speakers?
I haven't heard any major issues C70 owners have besides the sun roof's slight glitch, the PIA frameless side power windows at times, and perhaps few other minor glitches that the recalls from the factory might have already fixed during last ownership. Generally speaking there's not really anything you need to be alarmed....although you might have few sour owners who bought the lemons...
Again...welcome to Swedespeed, good luck with your purchase.

I'd go for a 98 if possible.
The changes to the 99 tranny made the car slower.
Also, steering was tighter on the 98.
Minor issues w/ trim pieces, although the recalls should have addressed them by now.

I bought my 98 C70 in June, it's an HPT (automatic tranny) and it has had no major issues. The largest problem I've had was a coolant leak that turned out to be due to a faulty heater core, but the dealer replaced this under warranty with no hassle. I love this car, nothing beats it, or the premium sound package http://********************/smile/emsmile.gif http://********************/smile/emsmile.gif

Re: I'm in the market for a C70, help me out! (Lucky)

id go for a 98 as well

my car looked nice when i got it.. worked fine.. then after i purchased it.. i changed the oil... black and thick... ick.. i dont think the previous owner took good care of it... 2 oil changes later.. the oil is better... and the engine runs perfect.

the rest of the car is sturdy...fun to play with the turbos...and plus the 98's have the better trans... where you can select econ/sport mode, where as the newer ones are just like the regular automatics in any other car. (i think)

definitely get the premium sound with 12 speakers 400 watts dolby prologic... best stock system known to man... at least before the new suv comes out ehehhe

umm full leather interior...ive heard bad stories of that half cloth half leather thing.

uhh uhhh.. there are the minor electrical and other issues.. but these are things you'll find in any newer car that has new safety features and luxury items. so yeah.. you may complain about it.. but other cars have the same problems too. honda, toyota, mercs, bmw..... its part of new tech.

if you've never driven a sports car with stiff suspension.. you may have to get used to the volvo's c70's rather stiffness, cuz you'll be used to a less sporty feel and more touring/luxury ride. if you've riden in a corvette or what not sports car.. then you'll be pleased with the softness.... hehe funny how the volvo's suspensions sits perfectly between luxury and performance... you can always upgrade to whatever type you want with the aftermarket parts.

Good Luck man http://********************/smile/emsmile.gif and welcome to the forum... http://********************/smile/embeer.gif

I believe the 99's were the first ones with side air bags, or maybe it was the 2-stage design that was new (might be important), and the side turn signal indicators, and I think some minor interior changes.

Try driving both the LP and HP ... the LP has almost no turbo lag, but loses a bit of high end power.
The HP has bad lag, especially at the altitude that I live at (7500'), and the ECU upgrade did nothing to improve it.
If you want around-town-drivability, get a LP.
If you want to impress you friends once the turbo kicks in, get an HP.

Definitley get the premium stereo!
If you can find a '99 with FULL leather, get that one (all others are just leather faced).
Heated seats is a must also!
I think the Canisto wheel styles look the best.
17" wheels are also an option.

When I was looking, there were hardly any to be had. You may not be able to pick exactly what you want ... I would look for the one in the best shape and cleanest condition. You wouldn't believe how beat up this one 99 convt I looked at was!

Have fun looking!

Same exact thing for me, heater core had to be replaced, but it's covered by warranty. As I was looking in the manual, both front windows are supposed to be auto down, only the driver one ison mine, the passenger one goes down fine from my controls, just no autodown. Um, keep the suspension greased at every service, gets a loud creaking at extremes of steering radius if gone untreated, no mech problem with that I guess. Basically, you may have one electrical switch to replace. Otherwise the car is a frikin blast. Yeah, go for a 98, auto tranny does have a lil lag, but that is fun. Everyone thinks they have you then the turbo let's loose and the guy that thinks he has you becomes a premature ejaculator eating your 99% clean air coming from your exhaust, haha. Looks bitchin too; a beautiful coitus of luxury and sport, haha. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

All good info, thanks. Sounds like these are pretty solid cars with no serious problem areas.

I haven't seen many 98's on the market, but will put those at the top of my list and keep my fingers crossed. A question about 98's... were they all HPT?

Thanks and keep the info coming!

Dude,
It just so happens that I'm thinking of putting my Black 98 automatic for sale because of a baby coming on board. The movement of the seats and the practicality of having a 2 door sports car doesn't fly with the wife. I'm in the Houston area and would be happy to send you pictures via e-mails. Price for it would be around 20.5k. Oh by the way it has 34k miles.
Let me know if your intrested. I'm not in a hurry since the baby won't get here until Mid Feb. But if your really intrested we could work something out.

Dariel,

Tempting, dude. Unfortunately, black is the one color I don't want. I'm looking for just about anything but white, black, or red (although I haven't ruled red out).

I see...Like I said I'm not in a hurry. The wife drives an S40 so I should be okay until she starts getting on me about never using the car to drive with the baby. But if the right person comes along I would sell it. I'm just undecided as well on what I want(S60orXC90). There is someone selling a really nice S60 on this website that I really think is cool. Let me know if you change your mind on colors.

I haven't seen enough of the black C70s around here. Mostly Silver and white.. http://********************/smile/emsmilep.gif And most of them are the conv. models.

If I could just have another C70 sitting in the garage as my spare car, I wouldn't mind getting a darker color one. The new dark grey we saw at Yannis' dealer is way cool, but black will do. Or an Ocean Race blue C70 would be awesome, too.

Hi Kai,

I saw in a few posts that you're looking for a better looking shine.
Have you tried the Omega Glaze and Blitz combo yet? I've tried just
about all the boutique products including Zaino and
One Grand is the only one I that gives me that certain look.

I use Omega Glaze and Blitz wax on my black Porsche. For the amount of work it takes (not much), the results are very good. I highly recommend the One Grand products.

Re: I'm in the market for a C70, help me out! (Lucky)

Hehe...since Lucky went along with the OT, I'll not be shy to share few things about the detailing topic.

Yeah, I've heard many others telling me that One Grand Blitz Paste wax works like a charm, but also some people tell me they don't last as long. I had so-so experience with Klasse, doesn't shine and last as much as Zaino. And Zymol just last as long as the time you spend to put them on. Also heard Pinnacle Souveran Carnauba Wax is some good stuff, but not sure if it's worth the money. So, I'm going to give the trade secret knock-off's a try....now I just wonder if Carnauba will bond with my Zaino...

So far, none of these products give me the depth that I look for, but I guess it's just my silver color. The acrylic look on the car is priceless, though.
