I recently went to start my '91 240 Estate and the key would not turn more than 1/4 of an inch. It would not even turn to the I position. Also, when I remove the key it does not lock the wheel. After refering to my Bentley Service manual I decided that I would probably have to replace the ignition lock/switch. I purchased a used lock/switch, so now I just have to do the swap. One other note on the vehicle is that it has 330,000miles on it. Has anyone had this problem? Is it an issue with the key cylinder or the steering lock or both? I noticed on the replacement that there is a small pin on the bottom of the key cylinder housing. Is this what holds the key cylinder in place? and if so can just the cylinder be relaced by pulling this pin. Any info would be appreciated

Luckily this problem has been solved on the www a number of times but answers may require a bit of reading.

Thanks George. I read all of the links and they pretty much stated all that I had read in the Bentley Manual. My only other question, just out of curiosity, is it possible to remove just the key cylinder from the complete housing? Thanks , Mark
