I want to black out the B and C pillars, without paint...

1753 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  JRL
I've always wanted to try blacking out the B and C pillars on my VR, like JRL's red wagon (a pic of it surfaced recently, but I couldn't find the thread it was in).

Problem is I would prefer not to paint it...not sure if it'll look to "busy" if the mouldings are black too (I have an 04...JRL's was an 04 but he painted the moldings red)......rather, was thinking I could "skin" it with a sticker of some sort like what fasts60r did with his Swedish Fish OTE pipe. Where would I go to get some of that material?

Thanks

black vinyl, not hard to find online pretty cheap. just search for it, buy a smaller roll and do a solid job cutting and installing, should look fine. if you have tinted windows, it should look cleaner, not busier.

I saw a post once of an M3 that was covered all over in 3M tape, professionally by a tint shop. They had all the pieces pre cut and it turned out (from the pics I saw) very well!

Perhaps something similar could be done for what you need

I have done this before to a few of my past cars. Cost me like $5 and took $10 mins. Sounds dumb but make sure the paint is real clean before you start.
Any sign shop in the area should have several different black vinyl pieces to chose from. Figure out what finish you want (gloss, flat, semi-gloss) and go in and ask for a couple feet.

I did this with my s70 and it cost probably $10.

If you just tape to the top of the pillars, (looks OK but different than the way mine looked) it should be a fairly easy job.
However if you do it the way I did, I don't think a tape job will be that easy, if not impossible to do properly with the amount of blackout I did.
Tape up to the top of the glass, if you like the general look but decide that you want to do it the way I did, then I suggest you have it painted.
This was not an expensive job, even from the pro shop which I used.

There are two ways to do it. JRL blacked out the whole frame around the window as well as the pillars. He also did the top portion of the side rear windows.

I opted for just the vertical section of the pillars only. There was a lot less material used and it is very simple to do. Just cut the vinyl off even with the window and leave the frame untouched.

Do a photoshop or quick MS paint to see which you like better.

Yes, as I said, that is pretty easy to do with tape.
I don't think my way would be easy taping it, just too much of it to do and it would be easy to make constant mistakes.
I assume you taped to the top of the window?
That looks good, I just wanted to do something that at the time no one had done
Take it to vinal shop / sign shop and have them do it .

Unless you have major paintence

Thanks guys...my plan was to tape the pillars from the lower edge of the window line to the top window line. A fellow SS'er offered his assistance...gonna do up some templates this weekend to start with.

Now, anyone know how to get a set of Heico's like those for $10 too?

You don't need a template, just apply and carefully razor off the edges
