I bought my s40 without knowing that the s40 se was coming out in two weeks and a bit cheaper considering it came with extra options. that kind of irked me, but I saw one today and I am quite happy with the one I have.
Here's my opinions
1. The spoiler isn't that great. it's not so different that it changes the look of the car
2. The headlight modification looks terrible. I prefer the clean look of all clear lights with clear corners. With the blacked-out backs, it emphaisizes the round lens, and that makes it look like the Lexus IS300's tail lights.
3. The rims are nice addition, but I can live without them. It would be valuable if you are selling the stock rims, since you can get some extra cash for the 16" rims and tires.
4. Exterior color is great, it looks like a darker version of ebony pearl on the audi a4.
5. the interior color is bad. I have a personal grudge against black interiors with black exteriors. I like contrasting interior/exteriors.
6. the design of the interior is really, really bad. it's the sport design, i.e. leather end pieces with cloth centers. But the cloth centers have a diamond-plate design, makes it look like the seat covers from a pickup truck. YUCK!
so all in all, i still am very happy I have my standard s40 (atlantic blue/taupe)!
I have not seen the interior of the car but I agree with Joe on the exterior mods he mentioned. Those headlights should have only been installed on the S60, I like them there, spoiler also isn't a big deal, looks like any other spoiler, I wasn't at all impressed with the choice of wheels for this "sport" sedan, OH I have seen the seats, What is up with the diamonds??
All in all the individual is the one who makes the final decision of wether to buy this car or not, i'm not against it, (hey it's still a Volvo!) but it's not like an 850 T-5R.

my 2 cents.
Carlos
2001 Volvo S40 "Volvo for life"

The two things that stand out the most to me regarding the S40 SE is the color of the car and the wheels. The Titanium Gray Metallic looks great, but the Stellar wheels look terrible IMHO. That is something that could be easily fixed though.
-Drew
[This message has been edited by InDy (edited 02-20-2001).]

It sounds like, once again, American buyers are getting the short end of the stick...
The "diamond" upholstery in Europe is standard, but not mandatory... you can order this car with all leather seats as well...
As for the rims, the standard for the European version is the 11-spoke Ares rims (not normally available), with the additional choice of the Cyber rims. And the titanium color, is, once again, only standard, but not mandatory. There are another 8 colors you can choose from.

again, americans shop their cars of off lots while europeans order their cars from the factory. we are limited to what a dealer can keep in stock. this is why we are limited to what is available.
