Girlfriend's been taking my car since she decided to mount the winter tires I bought her - IN THE DEAD OF SUMMER - and this fell onto her feet on the highway. When I was driving it the other day, the clutch pedal felt like it was 'sticking' to a piece of soft rubber at the bottom, and I think that's what it's from, but the clutch, brake, and steering wheel feel fine at the moment.
Sooo, I guess clutch return spring - any other takers? I just really do NOT want to make a dealer visit for this, so any input on putting it back on (if it's even necessary) would be helpful.

Yes, it is your clutch return spring. There should be a thread in here on putting it back in.

Re: I Love This Car - Now Let's Guess Which Part Fell Off Today.. (FEO)

Just because you are the lone person on this forum whose search works...
I recalled that thread actually - hence my brilliant deduction of a guess.
The question now is - do I care enough to get my hands dirty?
(first edit)OHHH, now I recall - before my SECOND slave cylinder, they chalked the clutch feel up to the pedal's spring needing lube. While I am hardly one to pass up the chance to use more lube, this was probably more than likely the cause for the demise of the assembly.
(second edit) - just wanted to what it feels like to be petew...
(third edit) - just for the rush.

ZOMG ITS THE SPRING THAT HIT MASSA!!!! LOOOOOK OUT!!!!
He's ok, so it's ok to joke about it.
So this spring, it does nothing? I mean, if the clutch feels fine without it, doesnt it not being there make your car a couple tenths faster through reduction of mass? Idk, if parts fall off my R and it drives fine afterwards, I just figure, hey, one less Volvo part to break, you know?

Re: (850arrrsaylikepirate)

Just stalled 1st gear 2x in a row driving it with this "new and exciting" mod...
It definitely makes a difference. It's drivable, but VERY different.
The clutch feels a little bit "harder," and snaps back very fast just at the catch point (hence the stalls). It also catches a bit more harshly, and seems like it's a higher catch point as well.
I've driven other MT R's (04 and 05) that have had 'stiffer' pedals, and I wonder if it's because this spring was MIA on them???

I like your outlook, sir.
...and on that note, it's going to be going back in with the stock springs

Re: (AthruC)

Okay, so this seems to be the story:
The two plastic pieces work as guide pieces - one has a rod that slides into the other one. Apparently, the common 'failure' is the rod snapping. To the untrained eye, it all looks normal, but this apparently is what helps keep the two pieces together, otherwise the spring will bend sideways and the assembly will just fall out onto your toes.
I don't feel like trying my luck with epoxy, or fabricating something out of metal, so hopefully the dealer will send me a warranty part to avoid the 2.5 hours round trip (x2) to have a BS warranty repair done...
*edit*
Courtesy of ChilledMan

You can see that the piece towards the left has an extended smaller shaft - that seems to have snapped off if you look at my first picture.

I don't know what it is, but nothing seems to break on the car while I'm driving it...
Not for nothing, getting used to it now, it feels sportier. So my dealer replaced these springs with just one spring... I questioned the feel immediately after installation and was told that the spring design had changed.
has anyone experieced this? or did my dealer order and put on the wrong spring.

The feel is different in 2 ways.
1) the first 1/4 of the pedal travel seems springless - a very odd feel
2) Under hard acceleration (fast shifts) the clutch will not engage at it's previous rate and causes a bit of an issue as the clutch is not engaging fast enough.

Anyways if anyone has info on this I would reall appreciate help.
I should have the part no for the spring that was replaced later today and will post when available.
thanks

I drove for probably a year with it off. The first time I told the dealer to fix it, they just wrapped the parts in duct tape and shoved it under the dash. (Why do this instead of just tossing the parts in the bin, I don't know). Now they're ordering replacement parts to install (maybe if they fall off, they're broke?) but they're back-ordered from Sweden for a month or something.
Whatevs. It drives fine without it. Clutch just feels a bit lighter without it, IMHO that might be an improvement LOL.
Pama: if the new part makes it worse, just take it off and go without
