I just drove a 2005 BMW AA stage 2 supercharged M3 ..............................WOW

The fit and finish of the car was flawless. It had an AA supercharger and the Dinan software, exhaust. The car had 11,000 miles on it. 0-60 claimed time was 4.1 seconds. The quickness of the car was unlike anything I have ever driven. I dropped the clutch at 20mph into 1st gear and lit the tires up in 1st 2nd AND 3rd up to 60mph the third gear transition even gave me a nice howling chirp. The car sounded like a jet engine at full acceleration. The interior of the M was not impressive at all. Simplistic at best. I thought the car was fast from the get go and then the owner had me hit the "track" button. That button alone is the most single impressive performance booster I have experienced to date. The car went from super fast to SCARY fast. All with the touch of a button. Apparently it adds gobbs of hp and tunes the suspension as well. All of this said, within the first 15 minutes of driving the car I missed my R dearly. After our romp in the M we took my R out. The first thing out of his mouth was WOW this is the single best looking interior I have been in. Second thing he said was WOW this is 5 cylinder? It sounds like a grumpy V8. Thanks to Magnaflow. While driving my car he says in a low toned voice " I might just have to get one of these for my daily driver, this car is sick" We romped around in my car for almost twice as long as I did with his. On our return he asked my if we could trade for the day. In hopes that his wife would approve his new purchase of the R for a daily driver. All in all if I could have either car at the same price as they sat in the parking lot, I would still choose my R! The M is great for the track hearted and the fact that it helps an insecure man feel better about themselves. I don't fall into either catagory(most of the time) So to the BMW crowd in here on occasion.....You can keep your M3's and I will stick to my beloved R.

Wow, Mash! I don't think an R has ever been given a compliment like the one you and the CSL owner just gave it. Isn't it great when you drive something that makes you appreciate your car even more?

They are fundamentally different cars. Perfect combo?
V70R for everyday, a CSl for track days and back roads.
By the way, the CSL was never sold in the US, so it's most likely a normal M3 with the Dinan supercharger.

The CSL was imported direct from Germany. He did the "BMW" tour and picked out his car. Then spent the next three weeks breaking it in over there!

Did you happen to pick-up the latest European Car with the 1,000+ HP (at the wheels) E36 M3 that they drove? Talk about FAST!!! It will spin the tires when the boost comes on in 4th gear @ 90mph
That monster was created by ICS Performance here in SW CT and they also were responsbile for modifying my dearly departed Porsche Turbo.
Sounds like you had a fun ride!
Regards,
Derek

Yep Active Autowerks claims 540HP at the wheels on the car I drove. Stage 2 upgrade I believe. Torque is a monterous 480

Really, the guys on RoadFly said bringing in a CSL was impossible. Do you have any pictures? That would be a 100K plus M3 easy.
And then take a unique, collectable car like that and slap a supercharger on it (thereby ruining the resale value) doesn't make a lot of sense....

Re: I just drove a 2005 BWM M3 CSL...............................WOW (FastWgn)

I too am wondering if it was a CSL.
CSL's should have:
Carbon Fiber Roof.
Alcantara covered steering wheel with only one button on it...the M button.
SMG Standard over 6spd manual.
No stereo
carbon fiber center console and door panels
fiberglass backed racing style seats
Some other goodies, as well.
Also, the M button on the steering wheel does not add HP in the M3CSL, it is kind of like the advanced button in the R's - makes the throttle response twitchier. I don't think it does much more than that, though.
Either way, sounds like one hell of a car, though!

I am one who would know.(why I would have to explain this I don't know!)You would think I was in a BMW forum. I have had 2 E46 M3's. One SMG and the other standard M3. 2 AMG's etc. The only pictures I have are in my head. If you would like I could draw you one

Schnitzer made an aftermarket version.
I know the guys that federalized RS4s and RS6 Avants spent abut $60k per car, and wouldn't even think about modding it.
Anyhow, doesn't really matter.
I'd be very happy with a normal CSL.

Re: (Mash)

That would be impossible at 65K. In Europe it was 82K USD. With a DINAN Supercharger it would cross six figures.
The car was not allowed in the country, I too have had a E46 M3 and guys intially when you did not need a CSL VIN to get parts were spending thousands of dollars getting CSL parts....above the cost of a M3.
I have seen some excellent replica CSL's and suspect thats what we have here, MASH no offense but the numbers don't add up and the fact several people I know from the RoadFly board tried to bring them in only to be rebuffed. I tried to bring in a Cosworth RS500 5 years ago and once the price tag was handed to me I cheerfully bought a AMG C43 with money to spare.
Great story though.

http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/cars/bmw_m3csl.asp
Notice the base price is nearly 60K pounds! that was a 2003, if I recall the CSL ceased production last year, so no 2005.
Re: I just drove a 2005 BWM M3 CSL...............................WOW (Mash)

Ok not to sound rude or anything but that whole story just sounds sketchy. First and foremost the CSL comes with SMG ONLY. You mentioned dropping the clutch in 1st at 20mph. The CSL has no clutch. Second, as ForceReconTrojan pointed out, the CSL costs a lot more than $65,000. That M3 probably just had a lot of Dinan mods. As far as I know that "track" button is called the "Sport" button which sharpens throttle response (like our Advanced mode) and I think backs off the traction control a bit. It doesn't add horsepower or change the suspension.
And did the interior look like this? Note the lightweight sports seats and lack of rear seats!

Here's a regular M3:

Now to the subjective stuff. A M3 owner saying the R has the nicest interior he's ever been in? The M3's interior isn't that bad. As for me, I've driven my friend's M3 a few times and I fell in love with it. I found it easier to drive and much more responsive. After getting back into the R, I missed the M3!

Re: I just drove a 2005 BWM M3 CSL...............................WOW (PhilUp)

Ok, first of all I called my bud with the suspect CSL. It truly is an 05 M3 with as many options on it that would make it look like a CSL. And he had the badge from the CSL on it. Carbon fiber trunk, hood and roof, aftermarket radio in a weird location(assuming he added it)By "dropping the clutch" it was by way of the SMG(I know terrible description) I guess I should have asked prior to getting so exited! I think the main thing that made me assume it was a CSL was the fact that it was faster than either of my M3's that had the full Dinan treatment. Granted neither of mine had a supercharger. And the badge. This guy is a new bud to me that I network with on the aftermarket scene. He is a real stand up guy and I never thought he would "badge" an M3 with a CSL. I guess one never can tell. Anyways with my head in the sand I was had. None the less I was very impressed with the car and to fool me, I thought would be tough! I guess not. Snap to me On the interior of the M3. I guess we ( myself and Jo) have owned a couple M cars and the interior is pretty much the same for the last 3 years. That is what took him back with the R's interior. Subtle yet edgy. I had a wondrefull 2 1/2 hour lunchin my R without eating a thing. Sunny and 70 here with the windows down and the roar of my exhaust feeding me what I needed. Cheers to all and have a great day.
