I'm no bodyshop expert, but dang that sounds high for suspension and wheel damage. Was the engine affected? I must admit that I am a typical NW tree-hugger, but that racoon might have deserved to be hit for the trouble it caused. Reminds me of the Geico ad with the two squirrels celebrating after causing an accident.
Sorry for your loss - at least the Mazda 6 will make you appreciate the "R" more when you get it back from the shop.
- Tryg

Sounds like my accident from last year. Tore up the entire passenger side suspension setup.

Thump - Thump -
Take the critter out instead of your car! You'll at least you could get a racoon hat out of the deal instead of a Mazda 6. Sorry about the R.
- Polartek

9G's.... Man would love to see the break down on that, seems crazy...
Though when teaching my younger brother how to drive (by 10 years) a while ago, he used to swerve to the little critters, ground hogs, anything. Had to give him a real talking to. Hit the brakes as hard as you want but stay the course. In the 77 3/4 ton pickup at the time we almost flipped once which brought an end to that. Even dear, I'll hammer the brakes but won't go crazy with avoidance heard too many stories like yours. In most jurisdictions animal damage won't affect your premiums either, as long as there is fur or blood or something proving it.

I can relate. I had a 1969 LeMans convertable on some pretty bad tires in college. One time at night (gotta love those low power old school sealed beams - my car had the original, 25 year old high beams when I got it) a rabbit ran out in front of me. I swerved a bit and hit the brakes.
Instant 180, off the road into a field.
I never swerve any more.

I disagree. Not because I'm cruel, but because a good many human beings are maimed and killed (and suffer) by folks swerving to avoid animals on the road.
It's safest for everyone to just take the animal hit. The property damage is quite secondary. The car can be fixed or replaced if need be.
But I feel his pain. I really do.

However, it's easy to say it when you've never had to do it. I ran one over many years ago, not because I chose to (since like Zigger said your first reaction is to avoid it) but because I saw it a split second before it was under my car. I heard the thump, thump and I really didn't know what it was until I saw it waddle off the road. I saw it later on the sidewalk dead. Made me feel kind'a sad but in retrospect it was better that way then to hit another car or pedstrian (or mark up my fancy rims Mid-town Toronto has a BIG racoon problem since the introduction of the 'green bin' for recyling food waste so one less racoon (as 'cruel' as that may sound) ain't gonna hurt no one too much.
LTA

Re: (LTA)

I've had the unfortunate experience of hitting a small animal/bird a time or two. It doesn't feel good but I stick to my rule and I don't swerve for anything smaller than a deer because I'd rather crush an animal than a human (the only reason I swerve for deer and larger is of course because they can seriously hurt you/kill you/total your car.)
