Can anyone explain what they are designed to hold? Thanks!

Perhaps yours are BROKEN!
These always break but when they're not (broken), they hold just about anything any other cupholder does.
Why do you ask this?

You don't seem to understand very much about your XC

^^^^:D

They seem to hold small+medium soft drink cups just fine. Not meant for water bottles or anything, save those for the door panels which have wider openings.

I know your pain, its as if Volvo hates 20 oz. bottles. When I went to the junk yard a couple of weeks ago, I saw an XC with cupholders that werent plastic all around, but only 3/4 around. Decided on picking them up for my 850. They have some flex / bend to them and they now hold 20 ox drinks in them.

Heres a pic of the cupholder I got (not my pic, but the same)

That's the cupholder that came in my car, it stretches to the bigger cups a bit, certainly handy.

IPD sells it new, they have it twice on their site for different prices, can't figure out what the difference is but both say they fit :p

Problem is, they're typically already broken if the car is beat enough to already be in the junkyard.

For the most part. Usually some are crashed and suffer an untimely death. One 850 I saw had only 76k on the odometer. (unless the odo broke super early)

The particular junkyard that I frequent has between five to eight 850/70 series cars at any given time(and I'd say they go through the Volvos fairly quickly before they are crushed). The cupholders are either broken or missing 95% of the time.

eBay usually has them for much better prices.

I just did an IPD replacement. Yes the difference is the color and you do get a genuine Volvo part. The install is easy. Yes, JY cup holders will be old and junk. I did mine just for the new rubber fingers so cans don't rattle. Even if getting a new cup holder, watch out for those huge top-heavy plastic cups, you know, the fast food super sized things with can sized bases to fit can sized cup holders. Don't turn left with one of those unattended in your cup holder!

You can also piece together the cupholder inserts. If you find several broken ones you can usually make one complete one. If they cost 2 bucks at a JY that's a lot of savings from new.
