Ok, I took my 2000 R in for its service at 131k miles. At 95k, I had the catalytic converter replaced because its was throwing codes. I'm at 131k now and I need a new catalytic converter again.
The dealer didn't have any explanation for why I'm going through CC's faster than I should be.
I didn't let him replace it. Does anyone have a line on parts for R's? I'm a little hesitant to put in another $1,100 CC when I can't expect it to last more than 50k. I might not be driving as many miles per year as I used to, but still... that's expensive for a disposable part.
Driving Style: WOT as often as possible.
Chip: I took the chip out at 100k just to be sure I wasn't killing the car.
Gasoline: Mobile/Exxon 93 Octane 95% of the time (Sunoco 94 Octane whenever I am in NJ)
Any Sources?
Any Suggestions?
Thanks...

Amoco/BP is a cleaner, better burning gas, (really)
Sunoco used to have a lot of sulphur, bad for converters.
I'm sure all gas is better now though
Sorry I can't be of more help on this one

how do they know you need a new one? get a second opinion? If you are infact in need of a new cat, you must be runing rich. Aren't you the one runing a GAIC chip in his 2000 V70R? If so, that could be your culprit... Time to break out the wbo2!!!!!!!

Assuming the cat/downpipe were replaced with geniune Volvo replacements, there is a 12 month/unlimited mile warranty for Volvo parts. You may want to have them replace it under the parts warranty. Otherwise, I'd recommend getting a second opinion, and if you really need another cat (find out if it has physical damage), and replace with a sweet Ferrita downpipe/race-cat system:

http://www.vivaperformance.com...d=414

Re: I am in need of my third catalytic converter. Why?! (gdogg16)

I do have a GIAC chip, but I've left it in the glove box for quite some time. I was curious if it was causing my issue the first time the cc went. The only indicator is that the check engine light comes on for awhile then goes off again. I've seen it come on at least 5 times in the past couple of months, but my father has been borrowing this car for a few weeks.

you've got to be runing pig rich than from a bad o2. Really only feasible way the cat will go bad. Does the car feel sluggish? If so, the cat is probably clogged from the car runing so rich. I had the same issue so I just cut the cat out all together! Much easier this way!

I'll ask to have the o2 sensor looked at/replaced. I'm having trouble finding an aftermarket cat that doesn't cost as much as the OEM part. Nobody seems to know if the ones for regular V70's will work in the R. If I keep having problems, I'll just cut it out too.
