ok, this is a rumor i heard from my friend
my friend told me on the I-5 heading towards San Diego from Los Angeles, there is a pretty steep hill. and once you get on the bottom of the hill, you pull over, stop, and put ur car in neutral, your car will actually roll backwards to the top of the hill.
can anyone tell me if this is true? if yes, where exactly is it? i'd like to try it out.

Satisfy my curiosity if you would be so kind: have you ever looked to see if gullible was in the dictionary?

Yeah, sure, man, it's like this Bermuda Triangle thing, man...There's this weird vortex thing, like, right in the middle of Cali where, like, the laws of physics are, like, violated, man.

This particular urban legend has been circulating since about 1966. I first heard it when I was growing up in SoCal in the 1960s. I believe it's the product of a few too many sensimilla mushrooms and an overabundance of high octane car nuttiness, unique to the Southland...

Yeah, it's must be a simple optical illusion. I saw a similar place once, don't remember where though... it's slightly uncanny for a few seconds, but then you quickly figure out that it's an optical effect.

I have heard this several times over the past 8 or 9 years, and I have also read that its nothing more than an optical illusion.
Prove me wrong...I love science

If you've ever done any surveying or grade layout, you know that the eye is easily fooled...and some eyes more than others.
I was once standing on a road we had paved that was on a 12% grade. Our surveyors had staked out the driveway, and looking at the stakes while standing on the road you would swear that the finished driveway would end up pitched back toward the road instead of toward the house as it was supposed to do. Turns out it was pitched away from the road, but the steep road my eye was comparing it to was fooling me into thinking it was going uphill, not downhill.
I vowed never to trust my "eye level" again.

Re: I-5 mystery??? (biotek)

There are many roads like that. There is one somewhere near a battlefield and the spook story attached is, if you leave your car in neutral, the ghosts of the soldiers who died at the battlefield will push your car uphill like they did with canons. Some friends of mine tried to lay claim them put talcum powder on the bumper and hand prints were left behind. That one is chalked up to Urban Legend and high school antics. Anyone else from the NoVa area might recall bunny man bridge and midgetville (I know its not PC, but thats what the place is called)

Yeah there is a road like that here in NorCal as well. When we were kids it appeared that the car rolled uphill, but when you looked at the hill from a different perspective, you could tell it was actually downhill. Nothing more than an illusion.

Like cold fusion, levitation is illusion. Force fields and antigravity boots are science fiction (more fiction than science). The bottom line is: Nobody - magician, scientist, or politician - has yet been able to repeal the Law of Gravity!

funny enough...watching the morning news while eating breakfast...they talked about this road "gravity hill" where you get the sensation that you are traveling uphill. they interviewed lots of people who made stupid-ass comments like "i just figured there was a warp in the earth's gravity."
anyway, it was proven to be a downhill slope (oh really?!?) with an elevation difference of ~20 feet over the ~1/4 mile stretch of road.
