Took it to the shop and they said: "I wouldnt worry about it" but they don't know what it is.
The noise is louder than before and the car has no mods. 2007 automatic. The noise happens on any gear but most prevalent in 3rd 4th and 5th.... only at 3K rpms. Anything less or more and it goes away instantly. It pretty much sounds like a beat up car with a huge muffler. I am wondering if anyone has an idea of what this is. Tried searching for it and found similar problems but not really the same, and most cars had noise after mods. Anyone? pleeeease?
thanks in advance!
After we tackle this one, we'll go to the more "strange" problem

Re: Humming noise at 3k - 3.1K RPMS (Denis)

brakes? even when i am not touching them? you mean like something loose?
Now since you said bearings maybe i'll post second problem which i thought was unrelated...
When i turn, and steer back to original position (straight) i sometimes hear a grinding noise and vibration on the steering wheel and shifter. The noise is kind of a metallic noise. It happens only sometimes which is driving me crazy because when i take it to the shop, they can't reproduce it. it is mostly at low speeds and sometimes worse than others. Sounds almost like it is coming from the rear left of the car. Does this make any sense?
thanks again

Try this:
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=91379
or search for bearing problems (lots of treads)
In regards to the 2nd problem, I assume that the mechanics have checked your PS fluid level. Could be the wheel rub (very common).
Otherwise use the search I remember someone posting a tread with similar problems a while ago.
Hopefully its nothing too serious.

Re: Humming noise at 3k - 3.1K RPMS (Akeron)

Humming at 3k means that it resonates only at that specific rpm .. (beat up car with a huge muffler = small exhaust leak?)
Second problem is your backing plate behind the rotor, just go ahead and bend it back out for each wheel, hand force is enough to get them moving.

Re: Humming noise at 3k - 3.1K RPMS (xman03)

thanks a lot for the replies. I will try that first thing tomorrow morning. On my way back I figured out the noise comes always from the same rotation of the steering... about 200 degrees while turning right. If I keep it there the noise continues. Should I be concerned about an exhaust leak?
Thanks again

I Have A Similar Problem. My Noise Occurs After Driving 20 + Minutes At Higher Speeds and When Letting Off The Gas Pedal. A Humming, But Not A Wheel Bearing Because It Disappears If I Lightly, Very Lightly, Touch The Brakes or Gas Pedal. It Also Goes Away If I Swerve Slightly. If I Were To Guess, It Feels As If It Is The Bevel Gear. I Cannot Duplicate On A Lift So I'm Trying To Figure What It Is Before My Warranty Runs Out.

does it get worse in the rain? I had that, and it was shaft/exhaust alignment.

Try the steering ram. Mine went out, sounded like the humming you get when blowing across the mouth of a bottle. It was sensitive to engine RPM and generally went away when I applied brakes or gas (changed engine RPM) or as I steered right or left (changed hydralic fluid pressure). It was most prominent at a slow cruise at a modest RPM. Replacing the ram and hoses fixed it.
Do a search for past threads on hydralic steering ram failures.

The symptoms you posted above sound exactly like the brake issue I outlined. This is the first that I have heard it connected to the steering.

So! finally fixed. Took it to yet another location and it was a bent drive shaft/exhaust problem. The noise from the wheels were related to the control arms. Car runs great now.

Re: Humming noise at 3k - 3.1K RPMS (mpdbrown)

yeah, this is ridiculous. This means I can never Valet park or give the car to anyone. I was getting tires rotated and they almost hit the bottom of the car getting it on the lift. I saw it at the last second and told them to stop. Last time I gave it to the valet, i saw car parked backwards all the way to the sidewalk and the exhaust was scraped... apparently exhaust hits curb before tires...
