I want an mp3 CD player solution for my 1994 850...and I want to maintain the same quality of sound as much as possible, and as convenient as possible.
I'm looking at crutchfield and I was looking at different solutions, including head units and such. I only want to change the headunit at most (so, in other words no speaker or amp changes)
Headunits I've looked at include all sub 399 recievers:
Blaupunkt San Jose
Alpine 7894 (maybe even 7995)
JVC SH909
Kenwood Excelon 659 (maybe even 919)
I heard the sonys and panasonic suck...even though JVC is partially owned by Matsu****a.
I would rather have something nicer, but i want mp3 and sub 400-500.
So, my cousin (mpeng168) also reccomended a changer with a m-sub adapter to be used on the current HU. I hate the notion for pressing "next" 150 times to get to one song.
As cheap as things go on the internet, I would rather go to crutchfield and get their iron-clad support and return polices

Re: HU Help needed (psycho-)

Im a fan of Alpine, so that would be my choice. I happen to like the apline units build and sound over competitors. The Cda-7897 is a great unit, the 7998 is even better. This unit offers better built in processing, better parts quality, and avoids the built in amp, since anyone at this price point wouldnt be using one. I think the cda-7995 is the best deal again, but its again in respect to those people putting together upper end systems. This unit again forgoes the built in amp in favor of a better power supply, better internal parts, and a better preamp stage. If you want one with built in amp, then the 7894 is a good unit.
Now this is my bias, I happen to like Alpine, and I would say for good reason, but others have other favorites. I happen to use a Denon headunit, I feel its the best sounding headunit money can buy, accep the Z1 which is even better, but over 2 grand, more than I wanted to spend. I have owned probably every headunit made, well I have owned one from every brand, and I feel that Alpines are more reliable. I think that Sony and Pioneer are brands to stay away from basicly because I had problems with mine. They were not reliable units, and I had trouble with repair. I have owned Eclipse units, infact I owned there top model with voice navigation and voice recognition, along with cell phone adapter. This was a great unit, sounded great, good parts quality, etc. It skipped really bad and the voice recognition went bad, however they were good about repairing it. They also offer the best security system you can have, its stolen, they replace it, that simple. Kenwoods are ok, they dont tend to spec well, they tend to be noiser and have higher distortion than they are rated for, but still far below audible levels. They tend not to have skipping problems, and I like the internal tuners in them, but I think there is better CD sound. I like the build of the excelon series, but I like the alpines better. Thats my choice, and thats why, Alpines are built better and sound better.

Re: HU Help needed (psycho-)

hey all, im new here first post!...not yet a volvo owner (but soon..xmas!)...ive been getting so much info from this site & everyone here!, i finally see a way i can lend a little help & knowledge.....
i am an ////Alpine owner...(CDA-7995)...& its the best. I chose the 7995 over the 7894 for several reasons...1. i chose to amplify by the use of external amps (not built-in) which leads to 2. if a deck doesnt have to worry about power, then it can focus all technology on signal processing! + it wont get excessively hot!
i got mine brand new from Ebay & im very happy, no problems whatsoever & i saved ~~$175..(crutchfield)...wow...
crutch. will give you a harness i believe, so thats a plus, but if you're to diy, then youll need a 2din-1din plate-thingy, right? so just get a harness from whoever you get that from...
the mp3 function on the CDA-7995 is awesome...really sweet...if youre worried about scanning thru 200 songs, 1 thing you can do is sort into folders, but 1 thing this deck does is, by using the control knob (yes, knob,...not too many have them anymore, & i know i LOVE them) you can scroll thru all the songs w/o having to work over that "next" button...!
one more thing about this deck is that you can adjust all the speakers individually delay each speakers to "focus" the sound wherever you want!...either on the drivers head, or the front seat, or the back seat...its awesome...ever see those guys who drive with their head in the middle of the car all contorting? well...no more! anyway good luck !

Re: HU Help needed (dj baracus)

I got a JVC SH 707, basically same as 909 with a little less features (don't remember what, but I knew I didn't need it) got it for about $200.
it has pretty good sound, easy to navigate interface, looks pretty nice too (I don't really like all the aftermarket black decks, too "weird" looking usually)
I got inifnity kappas up front with a boss amp putting out 110RMS X 2, sounds awesome. It didn't sound that good with just the JVC powering the speakers tho
