Besides the 4 disc vs. 6-disc... are there any differences in the speaker packages or headunits when comparing 04 to 05+ R stereo systems?

The 803 was definitely the superior system. The sound quality in my old T5 was top notch for a factory system. The 850, with PL II, should have been even better, but it doesn't sound anywhere near as good. While not a *bad* system, it lacks the punch of the 803.
Not sure whether they cheaped out on the speakers, the amp, or if they simply didn't tune the sound processing enough on the '05+ models, but there is a significant degradation of sound quality. I complained to the dealer when my car was new, and they looked at me like I was

Re: HU-803 vs. HU-850 (02s60t5)

I'm glad to hear this... we have an 06 (wife's)and it sounds good...but if I got an 04 for myself, I didn't want to downgrade the stereo.

I've had both.
The 803 has much better bass, plus the hidden menu makes it more "tuneable"
The 850 IS Satellite ready
Other than that, I would take an 803 over the 850 any day of the week
Oh, the Pro Logic 2 does work fairly well in the 850

I have to say the HU-850 sounds great when mated with the factory subwoofer (only available on the V70R IIRC). When we filled in the spec sheet for our special ordeR, the dealer laughed at me (they had visions of a Volvo wagon thumping the bass). But I'm thankful I went through with this option; I have turned the sub off and admit the lack of bass is quite disappointing. With the sub option and PLII, I give the HU-850

The '06 R is a better car than the '04. The stereo should be at best a secondary concern. Go aftermarket.
The 850 is still a damn good unit. Better than 95% of OEM's out there, esp. all those Bose systems that GM, Nissan, etc like to use.
