Hello to all!
Can anyone comment on what would be involved in swapping the above head units? Do I have add/change amps or speakers? Would it even be worth it to get the 4-CD changer functionality?
I believe the HU-650 is Sirius-prepped but where do you check for the pre-wiring?
Thanks,
Steve

Re: HU-650 to HU-803 swap (landsmarra)

You have an '02, right? That would be an HU-613 or HU-803. The HU-650/850 ('05 and up) are not backward compatible with the '02's. Furthermore, if upgrading from a 613 to an 803 you'll want an '03 or older. The facia color was changed in '04 and is a darker shade of gray from preceding years.

There were some slight changes between the model years at one point; if you google search these forums you'll find some posts that detail that. Some may have been cosmetic relating to trim and, if so, then you can probably swap them--and get the necessary parts from a dealer or salvage yard. Somewhere's in the back of my head though, I seem to recall that there was firmware change between model years that will prevent swapping some HU's--again you should be able to dig that out. However, if it's an HU-803 that you are considering, it's a no go. The HU must be registered with the car (ecu or one of the other control modules) and they will not recognize an HU-803. For more on that read Holderad's posts. He made the definitive ones.

Re: (landsmarra)

This impinges on the limits of my knowledge--but that never stopped me from speaking...
1st google search these forums for HU-650 or HU-850 and "sat ready." I think there may have been an early version of the HU-650 that was not sat ready, but you should confirm that or not.
Here are volvo's oem instructions for the sat package.
If your radio is SAT compatible, you will need a MELBUS cable from the rear of the car back to the HU. If you have a 10-CD changer or RTI, it is already there, or if you have a sat ready vehicle it will already be there. The cable terminates on both ends with DIN (male) plugs. If there, it will be plugged into the RTI in back or will be tucked away behind the driver's side trim panel in the trunk. You may be able to get to it from the access panel or if really tucked back, you'll have to remove the larger panel in front of that.
The installation instructions include good diagrams showing where everything is and how the cable should be routed and, hence, where you should find if it's there.
It's a little tedious installing it, but not difficult if you follow their instructions. There are lots of posts from people who have removed or replaced their HU's and a few from those that have added the SAT radio.
