Hi all. This is my first post on Swedespeed, but I've been sulking around the volvoXC.com forums for a while now. I've posted a similar thread on this topic over there, but it doesn't seem anyone has any experience with this issue.
I'm gathering my thoughts and materials before I tackle the installation of an upgraded audio system in my recently acquired '06 XC70. I'd only had the new head unit installed in my '01 XC for a couple of months before I decided to trade up to the newer model XC. There are lots of issues to consider: the fabrication of a new hardwood console panel to integrate the Alpine head unit; the fabrication of adapters for the Infinity door speakers; building a custom sub enclosure; placement of the amps, capacitor, etc. I'm actually looking forward to tackling all of that.
What has me concerned is the fact that the rear park assist system is integrated with the factory audio system. The display on the head unit gives notice when the system is active, and it really seems to me as if the proximity alert tone is emitting from the right rear door speaker (irrespective of whether or not the audio system is on).
Does anyone have knowledge about how deeply the two systems are intertwined? I could ask the guys at the dealership, but experience has taught me not to even bother when anything non-OEM is involved. Crutchfield, helpful as they are, can give me no specific answers. They tell me it's because Volvo plays their cards close to their chest, and is far from helpful with non-Volvo installations.
The Alpine head unit (CDA-9857) has an input lead for automatic muting of the audio. It's typically used for a phone system, but I could probably use it for the park assist system if needed. My main concerns are:
1) Does the parking assist system rely on any input from the factory head unit in order to properly function?
2) Is the alert tone actually coming from the loudspeaker? If so, where/what is the interconnection?
3) Are there any known work-arounds for non-Volvo head unit installations in HU-650 replacements?
I'm really eager to get this project underway as soon as possible. It's a crime for these components to sit collecting dust on my workbench instead of ruining my hearing as they were intended to do.
Thanks in advance. I'm glad to be here.
-Todd

Todd,
You may want to post this in the Tech/Audio forum too. The question would apply to several models (e.g. S60 & S80)

Thanks, Jack. I just posted it there, too. I'll watch for replies on both forums.
