We recently took delivery of an S60 AWD with the Premium and Touring Packages. This car came with the HU-613 radio as part of the Premium Package. When we we purchasing the car, we had looked into upgrading the radio to an HU-803, but they wanted a huge amount of money for this upgrade (something like $1,000 for the radio and several hundred in "labor" for the install) and decided to pass on this and instead decided to wait and see how we liked the HU-613 radio once we got the car.

After having the car for a month, we think the HU-613 is "good", but not what I would call "great". The system could probably use a bit more "watts" of power and possibly some better main speakers. The speakers tend to "break-up" a little too easily at higher volumes and aren't as crisp as I had hoped for. Does anyone know if there are any upgrades available to an HU-613 system without moving up to the full HU-803 system. I am thinking about maybe just adding an additional amplifier to add some more "juice" to the system and perhaps upgrading just the door and rear shelf speakers. Is this something available through my dealer? I am not too keen on having an "audio store installer" rip apart the dash and doors of my brand new Volvo and most likely mess things up.

Any other thoughts or options?

I have had the same delemma and researched this in detail. Here's the skinny: The 803 is more than the stereo. It's actually more of a Dolby 5.1 set-up. You would need to purchase the radio, all new speakers (including 3 your car doesn't have right now),an amp, a wiring harness, and the wheel mounted controls...Plus labor and lil bits$$$
However it rocks and looks "Factory" stock!(also add $3300 to toss in navigation which maybe overkill). I'd go for the 803 over Radio shack, for sure

What you could do and I highley reccomend. Many of my freinds work at a sound place, and i have the same problem. You have to get a amp installed into ur car. but look, when you get it, DO NOT get one with a really high watt. it will blow all ur speakers. when you take it somewere, tell them u wanna hook it up to the stock system, they will do it right. it shouldnt cost anymore then 300 dollors installed. you dont need to pay thousands to clearify some crackling in ur speakers, thats rediculous.

A small correction is in place here.
Th HU 803 have 3 different modes,
Dolby prologic, 3 channel and normal stereo mode.
The HU803 must have an external amp and speakers in all 4 doors and a centre in the dash as a minimum to work in prologic mode.

Hi!

The only "aux" input to the Volvo radios is that for the external 10 cd-changer.
