I think a complete car would be better than just the amp... don't know if I can just swap out the high performance with my basic audio module...

Yes !
I have to run a wire to the battery for power, But what about for the remote wire and am i able to connect to the speakers anywhere in the rear? also are there any easy places to gound ?

the whole body can be used for ground.
SO I tried this finally...took the trunk apart, got the amp out, opened it up, got the wire, split it, and before soldering it did a test run to C626 and C625 and....
Nothing. I was so dissapointed, I was there for at least 10 minutes with my friend with the music loud at 11pm (neighbors started getting annoyed lol) trying to hear ANY interference in the radio...and nothing. Dissapointed, I dropped my hands in despair, sliding it down the amp slowly. While doing that motion, I heard some strong interference and for a second my ipods music started to play.
Intrigued, I started testing where I would get any sound, taking care not to short the circuit. For my 2004.5 standard S40, standard sound system, I got a signal (most decent were toward the edge of the subwoofer)
c826 c619 c616 c621 c617 r626 r625 r630 r620 r621 r612 r611 r805 r629 r627 r628
These were all heard through diff speakers and diff qualities.
I really want to put in a relay but im not that great at electronics ( i had my friend solder the aux wire to the resistor)...So Im thinking whether its worth it to solder it w/o or with...decisions decisions...
if someone *cough* crossie* cough finnspeed* cough* would be willing to create a relay for me, i could test it out here...
so yeah. just wanted to let everyone know where i stand...

I have hacked an input to a premium sound amp in an 2004 XC90.
In my case there is no RSE units / headphones. The unit contains a dolby / DTS chip though this is not enabled.

I think he meant without the amp in the trunk. Some of them have a class D amp mounted in the little display up front I think? I'm also curious, I went looking for my amp but couldn't find it (S40 basic 2005)

Also, and I asked this before, but don't know if those who might know saw it, so I'll ask again...
I've got an early run '07 V50 with basic audio and single CD player and even though the manuals are written as if the players can play MP3 files, they can't.
I know Volvo now has a single CD player that can play MP3 files. Does anyone know if that could be swapped with the regular single audio only CD player?
Dealers and Volvo of course are useless for these questions...
So where is the MP3 decoding done? In the player or the display module unit?

After ripping the dash apart I've determined that my '05 has this exact same setup. Radio antenna wires go to the back of the CD player (single), as do a speaker wire connector and a MOST ring connector. I'm pretty sure it's the same connector that Volvo uses for everything (the rest of the HU* series, that is) although maybe someone can double check (that's rhetorical, I'll post in the audio forum).
Took apart the CD player/amp/AFM and took pics that look just like Jason's:

Which is really interesting that my 05 has the 07+ system. Anyway, here's the skinny. The whole shebang is controlled by a Phillips (bought by NXP) SAA7706H "Car radio digital signal processor." This is a very impressive chip. It:
1) Talks over MOST
2) Digitally demodulates FM and tunes AM and FM internally
3) Has SPDIF inputs for the CD player
4) Has a 5 channel EQ (probably unused) and digital volume control
5) Outputs Dolby rear channels (phase matrixed)
6) Has no less than 6 stereo inputs muxed internally and two mono inputs (phone or something)
The CAN interaction which handles radio station selection, cd track info, and button inputs is done by an ill-documented NEC D70F3261YGC which is a standard 32 bit MCU with a CAN stack. Not much we can do there. It controls the SAA7706H using an I2C bus.
The audio is handled by a ST TDA7563 quad channel (4x28w) class D integrated amp. It's also controlled over I2C communication with the NEC MCU (for things like mute, as well as relaying temp and performance data).
So to tap into this sucker we have a couple options:
1) The easiest and most obvious is to tap directly into the amp. This has the highest probability of success. One problem with it is that there are four channels, and an iPod or whatever will only have two, so you'd have to bridge them somehow.
2) A cleaner but more difficult way is to sniff the I2C bus and figure out what's going on. Using a 10 cent PIC you could proxy the communication between the NEC and the DSP, and have a button that would send it into another input mode. The car would still think it was playing the radio or whatever, but the DSP would be playing your input. Volume controls would still work from the wheel.
3) The cleanest and most difficult way would involve a SBPC (single board PC) with an SD/CF card loaded with music, running some incarnation of linux. That then gets placed in the I2C bus pathway between the NEC and DSP, and serves two purposes. One, it can send the NEC text to display on the screen (transmitted over CAN eventually - remember the radio can display text). Two, it can intercept the station tuning requests from the NEC and translate them into track change requests. It would also be able to spit out SPDIF directly, which would be nice.
What sucks is there's no middle ground - There are no stock stereo inputs active to tap into (the CD player is SPDIF and the AM/FM is on-die). Any thoughts Jason?

The options I have explored so far:
-Use a Spdif circuit to encode the stereo signal and inject it in the CD input.
-Use a simple muxer circuit to encode the stereo signal into an FM stream and feed that in (there are ICs capable of encoding RDS data as well, which would be neat with an ipod, it would display metadata on screen) <-- My personal favorite, though I would be concerned about sound quality with the muxification circuit.
-The method I have tried and failed at: injecting the stereo signal into the DSP at any point, and for good reason, there are no stereo signals to be had that enter the DSP. Oh well..
-The method I am planning to explore over break: Tapping into the amp, this was my next route. What are we getting into with bridging two channels? Is it acceptable to just tie them together or is some sort of isolation/leveling necessary?
And yes, that chip is pretty interesting, had a conversation with my friends dad, an intel employee, works with on die microscopic high tech cool stuff, he was also pretty impressed they had all that stuff handled by one chip, but we agreed it was likely an economic solution, more expensive chip, less circuitry on the board(other systems would have ICs to do each of those functions individually and the associated circuitry.
