question: how to upgrade from HU-650 to HU-850 ?

Hi I just got a 07 xc70 and wanted to upgrade to the HU-850.
It has the HU-650 but I think it also has premium sound because I have
all the working speakers (except I also have the NAV system and that speaker has no sound).
How do you tell if you have the premium sound?
Is there a special harness to put the HU-850 in place instead of the HU-650?
I know, it seems as if the 850 should be there if I have premium sound but I will admit I am confused by it all.
CindyLouWho

Modified by CindyLouWho at 8:53 AM 9-9-2007

Cindy,
the only way to really check whether you have premium sound installed is to remove a front door panel to look at the speaker drivers. Premium sound has a big (8") bass driver linked with an angled midrange driver, as well as a tweeter next to the inside door opener handle. Rear doors should contain a 6.5" driver, and the hat-shelf area should contain 2 x 8" drivers with tweeters on the side. To view the hat-shelf speakers you will need to remove the back board, which is a little bit of effort. Simply looking at the premium sound speakers you get the feeling that they are up for the task. These drivers do not look like Dynaudio units, because the dust caps look different. There is not much wrong with their sound quality though.
There should also be an external amplifier underneath the right-hand front seat, underneath the carpet. There are 2 amplifier models; a 200W (high-performance) and 300W (premium). It is not visually possible to distinguish between the 2.
Chances are slim that you will have the hu-650 with premium sound as factory fitment, this combination is simply not used. The hu-650 has a built-in amplifier, and is paired with some awful dual-cone speakers, packaged as the 'performance' sound package, which imo is a misnomer.
You can upgrade to the premium speakers if you have the correct front door panels. If you don't have the correct panels, then there will not be room for refitting them again. It is possible to upgrade the door panels through your dealer if you do not have them. Once you have the premium speakers fitted, the built-in amplifier of the hu-650 will not do them justice though (although the sound quality improvement is phenomenal over the lesser quality speakers), you really need the big (300W) amplifier.
To complete the premium package you will need to replace the hu-650 with an hu-850, as well as to add the centre channel loudspeaker. You cannot add the centre speaker to the hu-650, only the hu-850 allows for that, it uses a built-in single channel amplifier, iow it does not rely on the external amplifier for powering it.
If you have everything in place (premium amp, premium speakers), then it is possible to replace the hu-650 with an hu-850. Plug and play. If you do not feel up to the task yourself, your Volvo dealer can swap the units fairly easily. A software download is necessary to 'marry' the new hu to the vehicle, although it will work fine without it, just an error code on the computer diagnostics (not on the car's).
Hope this helps.

Re: question: how to upgrade from HU-650 to HU-850 ? (DJS)

Thank you DJS! This is my first Volvo (after 20 years of, yes, Subarus) so I am learning the Volvo ins -and- outs.
The dealer (who told me I did have premium sound) now says it would cost $3500 to make the "upgrade" as they would need to rewire my car plus install the HU-850.
Does this sound kosher? (it seemed like it would run more like $1600)
I asked thinking that I do not have it but I will check the speakers in the front door panel....
Who manufacturers the HU-650/850? I read Alpine cd changers will work if I wanted to go that route. Is that true of the 2007's as well?
CindyLouWho

630 has 650 speakers, 850 has premium amp and speakers.
you will need the 850 radio, (one for sale NOW in the for sale section), the amp and all the speakers.
You may want to think aftermarket as it would cost a bundle to go with OEM.
You could have a similar or better sounding and flexible system for MUCH less that way

Check with your dealer regarding the initial order for the vehicle. If you ordered and paid for the premium sound package, they are obliged to fit it for you.
The HU-650/850 is manufactured for Volvo by Mitsubishi. I think the amplifiers are made by Alpine. Not sure about the speakers; the 'performance' models are from HAES, some people say that the 'high performance' and 'premium' speakers are manufactured by Harman. Could well be. Volvo clearly pushes the Dynaudio premium speaker moniker with all models except for the S60.
Anyway, I do not think that the S60 premium speakers are no good, I think they are the best part of this system, they sound fantastic. The hu and amp could really have been a lot better.
If you have to go aftermarket, I would suggest to at least fit the premium speakers, and add your own hu and amp. The premium speakers come with the proper brackets, which make fitting them a snap. Believe me, to fit similar quality aftermarket speakers properly will cost much more, just because of the labour involved. Remember those front door bass units are 8"!. Unfortunately I am writing this because of the experience!

Thanks DJS,
So in summary, you recommend buying new door panels and speakers
and then an aftermarket amp and hu.
Where can you buy the door panels and speakers, only the dealer?
If so, how do I look up the part numbers for those?
Where is a good place to start to look for compatible amp and hu unit?
CindyLouWho

CindyLouWou, your dealer can assist you with the front door panels. Check for the correct part numbers to match your vehicle's trim. This is only necessary if you plan on getting the stock premium speakers.
Stock premium speakers you can also buy from your dealer. Not too much labour to install them, and the best option for warranty purposes. You can also find a kit on eBay; just search for 'Volvo Premium speaker'. Get the part numbers from your dealer or search this forum, I am sure I have seen them recently.
For aftermarket audio there are many options: do you want satnav? sirius? dvd? divx? dolby surround/digital? dts?etc. You will need to state your requirements to a proper audio shop for best results. In general the best looking fit is with a double din size unit, look for Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, JVC etc. These brands can give you all the features. Make sure that you can equalise on low/medium/high frequencies on all output channels to resolve interior acoustical problems. Most of these units will allow you to add external LCD screens if you like that sort of thing.
For the amp you will need not more than 4 x 100W RMS, this is all the speakers can handle, which is more than enough unless you want to enter sound-off competitions! Stick with an amp from a reputable brand; your audio shop will be able to advise. You can sub-woofers if you find the bass too weak, personally I feel that the stock premium speakers delivers enough, so check first before you invest.
And last but not least: always go for quality over quantity.
