Can anyone tell me how to put my S80 transmission into Neutral without starting the engine? Reason is, when washing my car on my sloped driveway, I like to roll my car a few feet so that the part of the tires in contact with the ground move to the 12:00 o'clock position. That way, I can clean that part of the tire without dragging my wash mitt on the ground. It also allows me to clean the inside of the wheel that I couldn't reach behind the brake caliper. With the S80, I can't move the gear lever into Neutral without starting the engine. That bugs me, since every other car I've owned allowed me to put it in Neutral and roll it with the engine off. There must be a way, so that, for example, an S80 with a no-start condition can be pulled onto a flatbed recovery truck for a trip to the dealer. Hope I'm just missing the obvious.

Re: How to put trans in Neutral, engine off? (GrecianVolvo)

Thanks GrecianVolvo, but I did that, and can't get the gear lever to move out of park. Ignition is ON, foot is firmly on the brake pedal, gearshift knob is depressed, but the lever won't budge. Did you mean a double push of the Start/Stop button? I think I previously tried both 1 and 2 pushes of the Start/Stop button, just to try all combinations. On my other non-Volvo cars with automatic transmissions, the 2nd position of the ignition switch or 2nd push of the Start/Stop button allows the gear lever to move out of Park.

Hold the Start/Stop button and that will put you on Position II. You'll see all the warning lights.

You can technically override the shiftlock(I believe that is what it is called) by removing the mat in the space under the floating console, take the key blade out of your remote, press it into the hole and hold it, and shift into neutral. Thats how you would tow a non starting car.
But I think you might be able to shift if you put the keyfob into the slot and press and hold for 2/3 seconds and then release (so that you get the fans blowing and such), and then try shifting. I'm not sure though.

Ok... as vivek9856, GrecianVolvo & djeremya said... here's a step by step guide to move the gear lever without starting the engine (I always do so when I apply tyre shine.)
1. Put the key into the slot.
2. Without depressing the brake pedal, press and hold the START/STOP button for 3 seconds. You should see the warning lights all coming on at this point.
3. Depress the brake pedal now, and move the gear lever. Also, you can deactivate the parking brake too if it's on.
4. Press START/STOP again to switch off the ignition after you're done. (Note: the car will not allow you to do so if you have the key in the slot and gear in any position other than P.)

Thanks for that info - I can't wait to try it. The S80 is up on my lift for the next few days or longer, so I won't get a chance to try it until next week.

Thanks djeremya and frontwheeldriven. I did the "press and hold" the Start/Stop button for 3 seconds, as you said, and lo and behold, I was able to move my gear lever into neutral without starting the car. My mistake in all prior attempts was pushing the Start/Stop button twice, rather using a Press and Hold. You guys made me a happy man.
