Has anybody figured out how to make both sides light up with the rear fog switch? This was easy in the previous 70 series, by simply adding a bulb. Same with the S60. But in the V70, the bulb already exists and is used for tail lights, and brake. I'm guessing it is software-controlled and that I'm out of luck.
Anybody?
- Darell

Darell,
So what your saying is that on the 2nd Gen V70, the rear fog lights are just brighter tail lights when the switch is turned on? So, what happens when you hit the brakes with the rear fog lights on? All that turns on it the center brake light? Confused...
-Drew

On the new 70, there are three lights on each side that get brighter, and the center of course. The rear fog currently turns the lowest of the left-side three brakes lights on. I'd like it to do the same on the right side. The bulbs are the same, the right side probably just has an extra wire going to it.
- Darell

Did you already try pulling out the light cluster to check for an extra wire? The only other thing I could think of is getting a British version of the right light cluster since their single rear fog light is on the right instead of the left. That might be more trouble than you want to go through though.
Oh yeah, and I wonder if Darth VADIS will allow you to do such a mod.
-Drew

Well, I figure it's either a wire or VADIS. Those are the only choices that make sense. And since the extra wire is the simple solution, it's probably a VADIS issue for sure.
I didn't have time to pull the cluster since my daughter was hell-bent on tumbling out the back of the car each time I let go of her. It was all I could do to remove the bulb and check it.
Eventually, somebody always gets around to making this mod. One of us will figure it out soon. It actually wouldn't be hard to simply ADD the wire from the left to the right.
- Darell

OK, I've got some more testing to do. I just followed the only other V70 in my neighborhood. Of course his DRLs were on, and only two lights were lit in the rear (one each side). Then he stepped on the brake, and two OTHER lights went bright (one on each side) plus the center. The one used for the rear fog remained dark, as did the three other lights on each side. Hmmm. Why the heck does that fog bulb have a double filiment if it isn't even used for the normal tail lights? And what about all those other lights that don't seem to ever light up?
This looks like a project for Super Volvo Dork.
I'm on it.
- Darell

Mr. SVDXCSK -
I was just looking at my rear lights reflected in a window last night, and now I'm more confused than ever. Does it seem to you that the upper-most red lenses (that wrap up to the roof) never light? I think those are just ornamental. And I still can't figure out why the passenger-side lower tail light has a dual-filament bulb when it is only used as a tail light (not brake or fog). I'm starting to think that much of that red lens back there is just ornamental.
Still haven't had a moment to myself to dig in and check anything. But soon I'll be stepping into my phone booth...
- Darell

OK, SVD has managed to look into this a bit more, and I STILL need help.
Here's what I can tell you for sure. The bottom two red lights on each side are low-wattage tail lights. The higher of the two on the driver's side is also the rear fog. Above those two (where the lens becomes narrower above the "power bulge") are the brake lights that do NOT double as anything else. Above those are the turn signals. The there is a bunch of lens at the top that has no bulbs.
The fog light is the top fixture of the two bottom tail lights. Both sides have a dual-filament bulb, both sockets are the same, and both wiring harnesses are identical. Sounds more and more like it's programming.
Somebody must have figured this out already....
- Darell

Heck, I'd be happy to come over to the dark side, provided I could light up both rear fogs.
-d

Well, my super dork tights and cape are still at the cleaners so I had to find a life this weekend. Slacking on the investigative tasks, and I can't find my multimeter to test the wires.
Those upper pieces are all ornamental to me as well -- and it looks that way on an old V70 I saw in a parking lot yesterday.
Will they ever solve the mystery? Will consumer smarts prevail? Will anyone, in the end, care? Tune in next time, same SVD time, same SVD channel/forum.
