Re: How to make the ride quieter (JRL)

Probably a more useful answer for a new owner would be to enumerate the most common failure points on this car which cause suspension noise:

Sway bar end links and bushings
Control arms (specifically the ball joints intergrated into the control arms)
Inner and outer tie rod ends
Engine mounts
Struts and upper strut mounts

That list should give you and/or your mechanic some places to focus. I would say that the sway bar end links and bushings are probably the biggest culprit to front end noise and can be fairly inexpensive to fix.

My noise problem is from the rear of the passenger side (on the left, its a UK car).

I gave it a once over today and the tire in that area is bald. So I've ordered a new one. Hopefully this will improve things.

Thank you very much for the suggestions slackjawed, now I have to something to work with if the tire doesn't sort it out.

The new tire fixed the problem!!

Its amazing how much difference new tires make. Obvsiouly the bigger the wheel the more affect a poor tire would have on comfort I guess. - I'm not used to having 17" wheels.

GEE, ya think???? Why do you guys bother us with all these senarios, waste our time and make yourself look like an idiot before you even look at your own car?

How can you only have ONE bald tire? Think about replacing all FOUR (I guess now 3)
at least TWO, You don't buy ONE new tire, you match fronts and rears, side to side

The two tires in the front are brand new. One of the rear ones seems new as well. Its just this one tire that was bald on the inside. You can't tell from the outside at all. I only managed to see it when it was on a ramp.

Given that it has been to the garage twice to look at the problem and they just said everything is fine and theres nothing that can be done. I'd have thought that people involved in the motor trade would be able to point out the obvious and told me about the tire. I guess they must think its a waste of time to look beyond the description of the problem.

What do you mean by "bother us". Its a public forum, its not YOUR forum, its everyones. If you mean to say that I shouldn't bother you in particular, then don't feel obliged to reply.

Re: (Token)

You didn't say all that.
If only ONE tire is bad, you should take a look at your alignment and your suspension as the new one may start to wear poorly soon.
These cars take a 4 wheel alignment not just a front end one
The statement was made because YOU solved your own problem. WE cannot, by a vague description of what is going on so I meant by that was: look at your (all of you) car first before asking a problem that's impossible for anyone here to diagnose by not looking and actually driving the actual car in question

JRL-
I completely agree with Token. That sort of comment is completely uncallled for. This is indeed a public forum.....if you think the question is not worth answering, then vote with your keyboard and don't answer. Berating people has absolutely no positive outcome other than perhaps making yourself feel superior, which seems rather immature in and of itself.

You're cleary a very experienced Volvo owner and have much to contribute to the forum. Some of us are relatively new and can benefit from that experience. The other option is put ourselves in the hands of our local Volvo dealer and we all know that can be an expensive proposition. Yes, it would be easier to try to diagnose the problem by driving the car, but you must realize that the vast majority of people don't have the option of meeting up with members of the forum for a quick spin around the block.

But if your motus operandi is to make people feel like idiots (to use your word) for posting questions that, to them, are important, then perhaps you should rethink why you bother posting here at all.

All in all, just relax. If you must laugh at a question someone has posted, perhaps do it to yourself and not in the forum. All that does is stifle conversation, which is why we are all here anyway.

I had the tracking done and I specifically asked the dealer if it also needed a 4 wheel alignment (after it had been lowered) and the dealer said theres no need for a 4 wheel alignment.

I can only go by what the dealer says. If he says no, I can't force him. But at the same time, the problem never gets sorted. So thats why I keep coming on here and wondering what to do.

JRL is a somewhat grumpy older gentleman, yet very knowledgeable. That said, the bluntness of his answers and opinions have been a discussion item for some time. He brings a lot of value to the forums, but his negativity needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Re: (Schweder)

Thanks, Schweder. I appreciate your comments and I do understand taking things with a grain of salt.

Being a little grumpy --- even crotchety if we are talking about an "older" gentleman --- is one thing. Being a bit negative or cynical is even OK. But being flat out rude seems to have no place in this forum when people are simply trying to get answers to questions.

Hopefully, we can all just be a bit more considerate and ALL benefit from this forum.

Continuing to be cynical, Token, your dealer is, well, an A** ho**!
THESE CARS TAKE A 4 WHEEL ALIGNMENT
I had one of my T5s and they had a hard time getting the rear to get "in alignment"
They have a rear toe adjustment (camber is fixed) and if off, WILL eventually give you bad tire wear.
"Not necessary" is NOT the answer and yes, you CAN force him to do a proper 4 wheel alignment
I never relax
