Ok, maybe I've been reading too many Hemmings publications ("Only [insert number here, usually something south of 50] examples of [insert model, make and year] were ever produced, and of those, only [insert number here] came with [insert variations of options here], making this a truly rare automobile.")

So, in the same spirit, I decided to look at our beloved R's, and confirmed we've got something pretty rare. Sure, you knew that about R's in general, but did you ever think about it when figuring in tranny, exterior color, interior color, etc? To wit:

For 2004, the number of R's imported into the US (according to a Volvo email excerpt previously shared on Swedespeed) looked like this:

S60 R Auto = 1531
S60 R Man = 1931
V70 R Auto = 1024
V70 R Man = 541

Taking the least of these (V70R manual), and using the following guess-timates of interior/exterior distribution, based on the general popularity of colors among swedespeeders and the propensity of certain interior colors to be more likely with certain exterior colors (apologies for the poor column alignment...excel doesn't translate to Swedespeed well)….

Gobi Nord Ata

Black 25% 35% 35% 30% 100%
Silver 25% 40% 40% 20% 100%
Grey 25% 35% 35% 30% 100%
Red 20% 50% 30% 20% 100%
Flash 5% 50% 20% 30% 100%
100%

....I estimate that the rarest 2004 R is the manual V70R Flash Green/Nord, at approximately 5 units in the US. Here's a quick rundown:

Black/Gobi 47
Black/Nord 47
Black/Ata 41
Silver/Gobi 54
Silver/Nord 54
Silver/Ata 27
Grey/Gobi 47
Grey/Nord 47
Grey/Ata 41
Red/Gobi 54
Red/Nord 32
Red/Ata 22
Flash/Gobi 14
Flash/Nord 5
Flash/Ata 8
Total 541

JRL, for what it's worth, my estimates show our 2004 red/ata/V/manual to be 2 out of 22. Not sure if the original production numbers above include Canadian cars, but if so, then Carson's makes 3 of 22.

Yeah, y'all laugh now…but wait 30 years when you see my wagon on the block at Barrett-Jackson commanding 6 figures.

Re: How rare IS your R? (icebiker)

Which is another reason I made sure to get my S60 R with the Sport Package.
Probably not as rare as only 5 V70 R MT in Flash Green, but rare none the less and that's OK with me.

How rare is it to own two V70R vehicles? I'm not as rare now, just down to the red (for now).

G-man, if Sunday is dry, let's hit the dirt!

Re: How rare IS your R? (icebiker)

We all know there are way more Ti/nord cars than Ti/gobi cars though, I think 47 each would be a bit off. I think only 300 R's made it to canada in 2004, S and V combined. Canada also got Cosmos blue in 04 so Lisa Lowens car is probably the most rare on the board. I think as time passes that magic blue is going to be the colour to own. Having said that Red/ata is the best combo of all right now. Especially in a V but only in 04, I find the 05-06 just too red. While 04 isn't perfect I do like it better than the ALL red cars. Now JRL's and IPD's are the best of examples I've seen so far.

We've had our car a month and have yet to actually see another one. I have seen one S60R, but no V's.

I have only ever seen one V70R and one S60R on the road in the two and a half years we've had ours.....

My R is so rare that even Volvo doesn't know how to quiet the axle splines.

Driving around Ramstein is like driving around an R commercial, there are at least 15 here on base every day. I have seen 15 different Ti Greys in the last two years, and have NEVER seen Gobi (13 Nord, 2 Atacama).

In fact, the R is the MOST common Volvo in my neiborhood. Seriously.

Re: How rare IS your R? ("R" Kelly)

Nice work figuring this all out. I am always intertested in the numbers from volvo. Kind of like the saffron V70R from '98. Only 113 sent to the US and I'm sure less than 100 still exist. I like having a rare car. Also that's why I like my 2nd car which is also rare with the split indigo blue cloth/grey and blue leather interior. I've only seen one other like that.

How do you get this information on #s from volvo?

Don't know how actually..for this exercise I simply took from an email someone once recieved from Volvo....but to my knowledge, no one's been able to get 2005 and 2006 figures....I wonder if Yannis or Lee (Volvo sales folks) could get this info somehow?
