If we are talking like you say VOLVO's that I had access to thou I had my own cars? Then I say 18-19 and dads 81 265. Then 25 mom's 86 764 Turbo. Then at 42-43? My 91 744 Euro and 44 my 965. I also had like you a stop at 23 and know the pain of my moms 82 or was it an 84? peugoet 505S Turbo Diesel.
OPPS late breaking news! I jsut sent this and recalled back at 15-16 my aunts 74 142E. it was powder blue, stick with teh OD button and had power brakes and manual steering. Very wierd that was. Drove that a few times. The thing that was awesome, was the cloth seats with the kewl stripes in them. They were a med lighter blue with black and red and grey stripes. Very sporty and diffenrt in those days. Sorta like the newer euro versions VW and MB have. I have driven a US spec MB C230 Sportcoupe with a very similar idea cloth seat and pattern.

BTW that is really strange Modified 83 505STX. Must have been something to do the turbo upgrade on a PVR 2.8L V6? Deloreon could have used you i think back in the day. And so could have Renault with the Alpine.

In 1987 I was 23yrs old, working for a Jaguar dealer at the time. Someone traded in a 1983 245DL on a new XJ6(foolish, imo). It only had 32k miles on it. I snatched it up for only $6k(wholesale) and drove it for the next 8yrs. I sold it to a friend....it had 225k miles by that time. My friend drove it for another 5yrs before he sold it.

How did that work? Didn't you then have to pay the Swedish 25% tax?

The only time you have to pay the VAT is if you keep the car in Europe for more than 6 months. In my case, I had a customer come into the store a week or so before the car got here....inquire about OSD and get the pricing. Went to work the next week and asked for the time off to take the trip...couldn't co-ordinate his/wifes schedules...so I sold them mine why not? I bought a rusty 122 wagon when I was about 20. That was when I was in my native Rhode Island 20+ years ago. After that I owned a '73 orange 144 which was replaced by an orange '75 245. Then I left Volvos for 2 decades till my teenaged daughter saw a '91 240 for sale and thought it was the coolest thing on 4 wheels. Well, I bought it for her. Once I started working on it and driving it, the Volvo fires were rekindled. Soon I was driving a '88 240 wagon. Now I look forward to owning a 544 once the empty nest time comes. Hopefully the prices won't go crazy like '60s muscle cars in the meantime.
The Volvo influence came from my Father who drove several 544s when they were new. He hasn't owned one in years. He is now thinking about his '65 544 he bought new. He's pretty sure he knows where it is today........

Re: How old were you when you got your Volvo??? How did you get it?? (xc4life)

Mine (1991 940) was passed down/inherited from my father when I was 17. It got wrecked a few months after when some old drunk man ran a stop sign and T-Boned me
I think Volvos are meant for ppl of ALL AGES. A lot of young professionals would go for a benz or a BMW where I live. . .but I most definately plan to keep Volvo in the family when I finish college.
Not to mention, I'm a sucker for a clean 850

So, let's see...
1982 245DL - bought at 21
1985 245DL - bought at 30
1991 945GLE - given to me at 35
I started a family young (too young) and the 245 seemed like the ideal family car. The fact that it was rugged, easy to work on and (since I had the base model) easy to find junkyard upgrades for made it perfect for a young, broke family man. We bought the second 245 for my wife years later, and sold it when she thought she needed a Dodge Caravan (a mistake). The 945 was given to me about six months ago when I heard that my friends mom was going to send it to the junkyard because it needed $4k of repairs (including labor at the local Volvo dealer) to bring it up to snuff. I figure I've got about $1300 into it fixing just about everything except the A/C. It's now my daily driver while I sock away cash for an Alfa Romeo and it'll be my winter/bad weather car then and eventually will be the family car that the kids will get to use.
cheers,
scott
