Re: How much paid for first scheduled service? (rovermark)

My first scheduled service is to be complimentary, standard perk in USA. I will be taking my V70 in shortly. The current benefit of a buying a volvo today, is the 5 year scheduled maintenance that is included with the car is excellent (unless they simply tack on $3,000 to the selling price of the vehicle).

Take it like a man.
I drive an XC90 in the Netherlands; more commonly called a Fifth Ave Tractor (translated). Just paid $1266,- for a regular 60.000 km service. Besides servicing, the only thing that was replaced was a turbo hose.
Welcome to the Volvo club; nice cars BTW!

Beer

Re: How much paid for first scheduled service? (frontwheeldriven)

I just had my first 7500 mile service done on Monday - along with the fan module repair for my 09 V70. I was not charged anything and the service manager told me that I get the first 4 services done free (through 30,000 miles). It will be interesting to see exactly what is covered.

yikes, I think I paid almost $400 for the 15K service here in Chicago. I also sprang for the synthetic oil.

Re: How much paid for first scheduled service? (Lotus99)

My first service was $222 after taxes for my 2008 V70. The breakdown was $60 for labour, $25 for the filter, and $13.30 a quart for Castrol Synthetic oil.

Re: How much paid for first scheduled service? (Fleder)

I paid $25 for the filter at the dealer, 9 quarts (if I remember correctly) of Mobil 1 0W40 at $5-$6ea and $25 of labour from my mechanic. Total cost is about $100 for me.
I have been doing the same on my MB for the last 3.5 years after the dealer robed me of $230 for an oil change . I did not even ask the Volvo dealer for the price on my new XC70.
I keep my bills for the filters in case I need a proof for warranty claims. I buy the filters from the dealer when I need them as proof of oil change. I always have a little stock of oil in my garage as my brother gets it for me in the US and buys it when on special. My mechanic does not give me a bill ... he is a friend.

Aren't you guys taking advantage of the Safe+Sound program. I won't be paying anything for scheduled maintenance through 60,000 miles, but I thought even before that it was through 30,000 miles.

Beaven, how often are you changing yours? Every 6000 or 12000? Are you using regular or synthetic?
Dealer tells me to ignore mfr recommendations of doing so every 12000 with regular oil because here we're in extreme terrain...

Re: How much paid for first scheduled service? (Lotus99)

I have been doing it every 12,000km with Mobile 1 since 1995. First on my 850, then on my V70XC and now on the XC70 and the Benz.
Both the new XC70 and the Benz have large capacity oil pans that, I beleive, puts even less stress on the oil temperature and cleaness.

Re: How much paid for first scheduled service? (beavenx5)

Good to hear. I'd have no problem going 12000 km's on synthetic. Do you think it's pushing it to go 12000 km's on regular oil in this car (the T6)? I don't see why Volvo would recommend it if it was a problem?

Re: How much paid for first scheduled service? (Lotus99)

I don't think it would be a problem since the oil pan contains twice as much oil as a regular car. This means the oil gets used haft as much, doesn't get dirty as fast and stays cooler. I check my oil colour as much a the oil level (at the same time obviously ). If it gets too dark, then I change it sooner.
I would not go more than 12 months (maybe even 9 months) with regular oil. I beleive mineral oil looses its properties over time more than synthetic oil.

Re: How much paid for first scheduled service? (beavenx5)

Sounds good. That's where I was leaning too for regular oil.
PS What engine oil type are you using? I noticed that the manual suggests 5W-30 for the most part, but my dealer's putting in 10W-30 I just noticed from my last service papers.
Is that a problem you think?
If I understand the way the numbers work, 10W instead of 5W means that it can't go thru as cold temps as 5W can, right? We are in the Pacific Northwest, so don't get extreme cold or not, so maybe that's ok.
But I'm wondering then why not just follow Volvo's recommendation, since 5W seems safer and has a bigger operating temp range? What's the advantage to using the 10W over the 5W?

Re: How much paid for first scheduled service? (Lotus99)

I use Mobil 1 0W40 in both my cars. I am far from being an expert on this but I beleive the certification is the important factor in selecting the proper oil. You are right about the 5W being required for our winters here in Qc but probably not for you in BC. Most people here use 10W30 in summer and 5W30 in winter. 0W40 covers an even wider range of temperature for the entire year.
As per my Mercedes dealer, I was told that the Mobil 1 5W30 does not have the certification required by Mercedes where the Mobil 1 0W40 does. My dealer uses Quaquer State syntec 5W30 for regular Benz and Mobil 1 0W40 for the AMG ones. This is why the dealer told me I should use the Mobil 1 0W40 if I whish to go with that brand and my car would be happy with it. I used the same logic for my old Volvo and now with the new.
If there is any expert here that would like to comment on this, it would be welcome.
