Seeing as lots of you use the SilverStars it seems, how long are you finding they last? I'm in Canada, so they are on all the time, but one has just gone out, and its only 6 months old..........gonna be expensive replacing these every 6 months.

Re: How long you getting out of SilverStars? (BellevilleV70)

I ran them as DRL on my previous T5 and got well over 1 year. Also have them on my '98 V70R and also have 16 months on them with low beams on as DRLs. No bulb failure yet.

2 months for 2 different sets. I just went back to stock. At 20.00 a bulb I was out 80.00 in just 4 months. I did use them during the day with minimal commuting (22 miles each way on a 5 day work week)

There are 2 types of SilverStars. Ones made by Sylvania and ones by Osram. The Sylvania ones are known to have a short life (approximately a year). The Osrams bulbs have a much longer life. <p>I had them for 4 years in my previous car without any issues (the Osram Silverstars). Currently running almost a year with them in my R.<p><A HREF="http://www.powerbulbs.com" TARGET="_blank">http://www.powerbulbs.com</A> are the best place to buy the Osram Silverstars.<br>

I didn't know that. I've only seen the sylvania silverstars at my local autozone. I'll look for the osram silverstars. Do they come in 9006XS?

Cool, thanks, didn't know that! I agree, Osram are much better, I have osram 100w H3s in my Jeep, and they last well ovre a year, other brands, 3 months or so.

Both Osram's and Sylvania's website show the estimated life of the Silverstar bulbs to be a full order of magnitude less than their stanard bulbs. For example, the H1ST from Osram is rated at 150h and 300h (1730 lumens at 13.3V) but the standard Osram H1 is rated at 1200h and 2000h (1380 lumens at 13.3V) That's a HUGE difference in life expectancy <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/eek.gif" BORDER="0"> <br>(I don't know why they show two life expectancy numbers or exactly how they translate to real world experience but the point is the difference is very significant)<p>The H1ST's in my 2002 T5 (fog lights) burned out like crazy, it was nuts and expensive (I ran them all the time and seems like one would burn every 3-4 months). But the H7's in the same car lasted WAY longer (over a year for those). I think it comes down to the application. I think the T5's fog lamp housing really shook around in the skirt, they seem really loose so I think all the road vibration was killing the H1ST's. The headlamps were more solidly mounted for the H7ST's so <I>maybe</I> that's why they lasted longer.<p>I've had H3ST fogs and 9006XST DLR's in my R since April and they're still going strong, other R owners have said they last a year at least. <br><TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD><i>Quote, originally posted by <b>"R" Kelly</b> »</i></TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote"><br>None of my Sylvania Silverstars have ever burnt out. They give you a year warranty and will replace them in that year if they burn out. Also, they said they test and rate them at 12V but most cars run at over 14V which is another reason why they burn out quickly.<p>BellvilleV70 - You have two options: 1. Get them from Canadian Tire and if they burn out within a year they will swap them over the counter, or 2. Get them from eBay for MUCH cheaper, get yourself a couple sets in one order to save on shipping etc. <p>I just ordered two 9145ST's for my XC90, all said and done for $31CDN(that's two bulbs, shipping, exchange, etc. all in). It's my first time getting Silverstars this way, this is the <A HREF="http://search.ebay.ca/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZinnovation101QQssPageNameZSTRKQ3aMEWAQ3aMESOI" TARGET="_blank">guy</A> I got them from, I hope they arrived as promised. Check with me next week and I'll let you know...<p>LTA<br>

Re: How long you getting out of SilverStars? (BellevilleV70)

On my previous car, a Solara, I was getting about 6 months on the fog lights and about a year on the low beams. Use both on all the time. Studies have shown a 25% reduction in accidents with lights on all the time. Great bulbs but you pay the price to replace, ebay has some good pricing...

I just purchased 2 sets (4 bulbs) H7 for my T5 for $40 bucks total off ebay. They say stock bulbs last longer though.
