I have a 1995 850 turbo sedan with 117,000 miles
on it. When I bought it, my mechanic said that the
turbocharger is $1800 (USD) to replace, and that it
lasts 120,000 miles.
So is my turbocharger about to die? and if it does should I
get a Volvo turbo or an aftermarket turbo?

I wonder if there is really a magic number, probably goes when it goes. A turbo timer would lengthen the life of the turbo substantially when you get you new one.

When turbo's die it's before 5K miles or else, depending on usage of course, mostly after ~100K-140K miles.
Most symptoms are cracked turbine housings.
Some turbo's are being replaced while only the wastegate actuator went bad.
A new OEM turbo for a T5 shouldn't be more expensive than ~$800 with return of the old turbo.
With "normal" daily usage there is no need for a turbo timer.
My 850's stock 15G turbo was replaced at 265K km (165K m) but I don't know for what reason.
The car is an ex police car with a lot of highway mileage.

My moms turbo wagon was driven pretty hard and had 184k miles. It was probably close to needing a new turbo. Just make sure the oil is changed at the proper time and you will be okay. Its every 3k miles with turbo engines and like every 5k with n/a engines. For volvo's at least.
