I know not many people will believe me, but I have been able to take my stock 2002 S40 75th, straight from the factory..........up to the speed so far of 138mph. While on the Autobahn a few weeks ago, it just kept going faster. Since I have a US spec car, I was under the assumption that the governor kicked in around 129 or so, and I decided to see when it kicked in....except it didn't. I had to slow down as I was approaching a construction zone, so I'm not sure when it would have kicked in, provided it is even working right. Not sure what the RPM reading was, but I am going to try again this weekend if I get the oppertunity. Yes, It was MPH, not KPH, hehe. So far the only proof I have is on my handheld GPS, with a top speed recording of 138, even though the dash said about 140.
True Sweedespeed for me...
norton37 - 2K2 Atlantic Blue 75th S40

Norton,
The speed limiter didn't kick in, because the 40 series hasn't got one (making it the fastest Volvo top speed wise).

Isn't the limiter something that is required on all US spec cars? Not that I am complaining mind you...hehe...
Anyone know the reason the S40 does not have one? Do they figure that no-one will bother trying to go that fast in a 4 cyl? Just curious.

Not sure that taking your car up to full speed straight from the factory will do the engine much good. It will still be "tight" and many of the moving parts will not have "bedded in" Just a thought!

I guess I should clarify that...
I picked it up at the factory, but didnt do the speed test until a few months later around 3500 miles. What I was saying was that I have done no modifications to it, or upgrades that might have given it a performance boost. If there is no limiter, then this most likely is the answer. Now I'm worried about blowing the engine if I try it again...hehe.
Actually, anyone with a story of doing something similar and wrecking thier engine?

norton,
I have hit 140/145, it was somewhere in between there only once. I've had it up to 130/135 several times and no problems. Please drive safely.

Limiters are only in effect for cars that can exceed 155 mph. Those cars are limited to 155. So the x40s don't have limiters. My mom's 740il is limited by 2 given reasons;
1. I read about it (this doesn't count, hehe..)
2. The speedometer only goes up to 155
If you look at many of the high tail Mercedes', audis, and BMWs, their speedometers should be around 155.

I own a 2001 Volvo V40 T-4. I believe it has a speed limiter. I think you don't have this model stateside. I have gone to a max speed of 235 km/h. The max speed varies - on colder days the car absolutely flies. The stated HP on the T-4 is 200 ponies (it has a full blown turbo vs the LPT in the US model). Ran into an 850R one day, passed me at 235 km/h and kept going.... Hard to beat 50 additional ponies. Happy with 200...for now. Beauty of having a V40 is I can have 5 occupants + 5 golf bags and still do 200 km/h + easy.

Re: (norton37)

I've taken mine up to 130. The stock suspension is pretty soft in these cars and missouri has the worst roads in the country so I'd feel comfortable taking it much higher. I've read that they peak out at 149.

Re: (GrecianVolvo)

This is from my local volvo dealership in berkeley, ca. if you look near the middle, it says the 2.9 top is 130mph and the T6 is 150mph. But I do not know where they received these numbers. I would guess it would be around 140 for the T6. If you exclude the Rs, the C70 HPT would probably be the fastest of the Volvo line-up.
FYI, I haven't tried top for my S40, but so far I have went up to 109mph, and that was easy. I'll try and find more references for those volvo speeds.
http://www.berkeleyvolvo.com/pages/specifications/S80-specs.html
I have time, so I might as well put the numbers I see on the rest of this site.
S40- 134 mph
V40- 134 mph
S60 2.4/2.4T- 130 mph
S60 T5- 150 mph (They had 130, but think they meant 150)
V70 2.4/2.4T- 130 mph
V70 T5- 150 mph
V70 XC- 124 mph
C70 LPT- 137 mph
C70 HPT- 149 mph
S80 2.9- 130 mph
S80 T6- 150 mph
These are 2002 numbers

I was coming across the SoCal desert (in these killer switchbacks we have here) a month or so ago in my C70. And I was in the process of whipping a Lexus' ass all over the damn place which I succeded and I looked down to see how fast I was moving (thinking I was doing 90 ish the car was so easy to drive and wasn't squirming around) well the speedo was buried and it stops at 145. So I was at least doing 150+ ish. I emailed Scott Hart at IPd and he told me that when they do the ECU upgrade they "alter" the top speed and the top rpm's too. He didnt give me the "exact" numbers but I would guess its in the 155 mph range. So since your car has been "fixed" by IPd too I would guess you car will go faster than it originally did. IPd all the way!!!!!!!!!!!

We ar enot talking about iPd altered cars. Sure, when we flash our ECUs, the rev limiter and the top speed governor have been removed. I have read about TME's 2001 V70 T5M; they reached a speed of 162mph.
The poster, above, went to some Volvo retailer's website where they are listing wrong top speeds. For example, I know for sure the V70 T5 speed is not accurate because I took my car to the limit (and if one reads our training manuals he/she will see that those speeds are false) before the iPd and I could not get past 130.
Yannis
