Re: How far on "--- miles to empty tank"? (s40turbo585)

This reminds me of that Seinfeld episode with the SAAB...

http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=44347
A problem I used to have is that when the fuel level goes pretty low, it was hard to fill up completely. Now when I fill up, I slow it down when I get to about 10-11 gallons. This has helped me fill almost 15 gallons. My fuel indicator now goes past full, before it'll be right at or little less.

I remember reading somewhere that it turns to the --- when there is less than 12 miles left.

I ran my tank down today to find the answer for us. On my T5, it hit --- and I filled up 3 miles later. My tank took 14.72 gallons to fill my 15 gallon tank. I average 26mpg, so .28gal*26mpg+3 mile wait = 10 or so miles once you hit ---.

There is a 14.5 gallon tank for vehicles with engine code of 39 although I have to admit I have no idea what they are (perhaps a state specific low emissions version?)
UKMatt

The one time I explored the outer reaches of "--" I went almost an additional 30 miles before filling up. And that was at ~20 mpg, so I had at least 1.5 gallons left in the tank when "--" came up. (And if memory serves, I pumped just a bit more than 15 gallons then.)

Re: How far on "--- miles to empty tank"? (s40turbo585)

About 15 miles, I think that's what the salesman told me when i picked mine up - I've had it down to just "-" and then got nearly 47 litres in (diesel tank is a lot smaller)

I think the manual states 12 or 15 too from what I remember
I've almost always let it go down to ---- miles to go although not sure if this is a good thing
the problem with that is that for instance, I can turn the engine off at 10 miles to go
when i turn it on its ----- to go
so how do you measure... because it could be that only 1 mile is left or the 9 miles is left
difficult so I would suggest not to risk it always
