How do you convince the Volvo dealer to install XC90 axle bolts?

I've got some major axle ping going on, so I'm taking my car to the dealership tomorrow to have my axle bolts replaced (under a CPO warranty). They wouldn't agree to replacing them with XC90 bolts when I set up the appointment this afternoon--suggested that I talk to the service manager when I arrive tomorrow. Any suggestions for getting them to install the XC90 axle bolts?
Thanks.

Offer to pay for the bolts as worst case scenario.

Fields Volvo perchance? If so, talk to Marco, he seems to be very understanding wrt warranty repairs (LOL, Stoyan ).
Ultimately, you should try explaining that the rubber grommet (being the only differecne between the XC90 bolts and the R bolts) has been proven over several dozen cases, to cure this problem permanently, whereas the loctite fix has proven to never hold permanently, and you want to save both yourself and the dealership the expense and inconvenience of coming right back in a week when the loctite fails, but that you WILL be back in a week if it fails, and have them doing it again. Make it worth their while, in a sense.

Volvo of Lisle. According to shop foreman, Dan, XC90 bolts no longer have the rubber grommet. If they still did, he had no problem doing it. I'll go with his recommendation of standard bolts and some extra grease. He did say that Volvo's current recommendation is to use a strong glue to fix the problem. However, this is a permanent fix, and if you ever have to replace the hub, you are screwed, and will have to replace the axle with it. He does not support Volvo's recommendation.

The glue still fails (mine did after 2 weeks).
No more rubber on the XC90 bolt? I doubt it, that would be parts department suicide..?
Solution - go to another dealer, or order them online (at a discount), show them the rubber, and have them install those.

Ever better solution, forget the dealer. Get the part number and change the bolts yourself. Should take 3 to 4 minutes at most. Saves you tons of wasted time arguing with the stupid dealer and resolves the problem at least temporarily.
I skipped the dealer and order the bolts from tasca and made the correction myself. Year and a half later and the ticking has not returned.
Simple solution to a simple problem...

But, if you do pay out of pocket for the XC90 bolts (and they ARE super-easy to install), make sure you write a nice letter to Volvo explaining how their dealer network knows so little about their own parts, and the right way to fix their own product.

I tried fixing it under CPO warranty - no go.
I ended up buying the bolts from John, got them in 2 days and installed them in 3 minutes. Quick and easy fix.
Don't waste your time with dealer trips.

Back from the dealer now, fixed under CPO warranty using their solution. As long as they are willing to fix it under warranty using their solution, I will go with that. Thanks for the help with the part number. I will keep it for future reference and if it happens again, I will give them the XC90 part number.

I'm glad you got this all figured out. I was just looking at some of the old TNN's and saw this and hoped I got it to you in time. But I see your good but I'll post it anyways. Maybe it'll help some one else out in the future.
TNN77-08-2004-03-25 Title: Front Axle Ping Noise
When performing garage shifts (Drive to Reverse / Reverse to Drive), the hub axle interface may make a ping type noise. This noise may also be heard while cruising and changing from acceleration to deceleration. Note: For those who have had no luck with the metal adhesive fix should request the axle bolt specified in the XC90’s TNN77- 09.
The axle bolts I just ordered and received from IPD did not have the rubber washers. Application for them includes XC-90. Cost was under $10 for the pair, but no rubber washers.

I had the axle ping (which sounds more like a click than a ping to me) with my R well within warranty. I didn't even bother contacting the dealer. Got my XC-90 bolts with rubber washers very quickly from John at Boston Village Volvo. Installed the bolts. Problem solved. Clicking sound hasn't returned in 2 years. Forget adhesive on the axles. Fixing the problem yourself gives you more time to worry about more important things, like fragile angle gears!

How do you convince them to install the bolts? In my case, threaten lemon law after the first two gluings(?) didn't hold. Funny how fast the reginal rep was willing to handle the situation (then again, I did go over his head for the axle hubs on the 2nd attempt). Why can't Volvo figure this easy fix out yet?
