I test drove a 2009 V50 auto and noticed my size 11 shoes hitting "stuff" up by my toes. I searched on this issue, and was surprised that there were numerous people commenting on the same issue.
So, how bad is it? I want to get a manual, but am worried that the problem may be worse with the extra pedal and constant shifting.
Additionally, do the manuals have dead pedals? This auto did not and I found the hump where my left foot rested (due to the wheel well) not that comfortable and there wasn't room to put it in between the brake pedal and that hump.
GaryJ

Re: How bad is the "limited footwell" issue (GaryJ)

I know for a fact that the manual trans also has a dead pedal (foot rest). I can say that I can easily drive comfortably. just find the right combo of seat height and distance. You'll be fine.

I've got an auto, a size 11 foot/shoe, and have no real problems with the pedals/footwell area. I also have the Heico pedal kit with the dead pedal and love it. The kit is pricey, but I think it or a similar kit (ebay has a ton) makes the pedals so much better looking and easier to use.

Re: (carreragt7)

I think my biggest complaint is that the stuff is a bit close together. I wear skate shoes and notice that my wide shoes catch the pedals on occasion.

But I have found my right foot has been stuck down there before.

I wouldn't let it deter you. Now, needing an aux-in to the stereo should steer you to a newer model year, but that's a different topic...
I wear 11s, and wear skate shoes to toe-heel (aka left side-right side) my downshifts, and have no problems.
You can see the factory dead pedal location in this pic. (takspeed pedal covers and Volvo winter floormats installed) I hear there was no provision made for a dead pedal for right-hand drive cars, though.

Re: (ForceFed Motorsports)

When I was looking around for cars, I test drove an S40 automatic, and I'm about 6'3" and wear shoe size 11 1/2, and I did find the footwell to be a bit cramped, and even with the seat all the way back, it just felt a bit...weird for lack of better description. And during the test drive, the pedals weren't thattt comfortable to use.
Thats one of the reasons I went for the S80, because now I can pull the seat back and low, have tons of legroom, and a nice position to hold the wheel. Otherwise, I would have stuck with the S40, and now that I think about it, even being a bit cramped, I still regret not getting the S40 over the S80. doh...

I wear a size 13 and find my foot catching the pedals every once in a while. I usually wear narrower boots but sometimes if I wear my steeltoes or Etnies skate shoes (wide) they clip the pedal. Not the end of the world but it does happen.

Thanks everyone for the replies. That was really my last obsticle. I think all I have to do now is pick a color, which I'm finding really hard.

Safari Green isn't available. Brillilant Blue is and agree, very nice. I think I've narrowed it down to Brilliant Blue, Passion Red, or Electric Silver Metallic. This is for a T5 R-design V50.
GaryJ

It's a very tight fit for me but once I got use to it I haven't had any problems. Not a lot of difference in the auto than the manual (but it's definitely a little more cramped).
I would still choose my 6-spd. manual again without hesitation. The gas pedal bothers me the most on S40's because the inner foot well/dash get's on my nerves. I always have to rest my leg on it and my foot (gas pedal) is never comfortable.
Good luck on the V50! I wish I would have gone that route over the S40 (more room).

Re: (ncS60)

the closeness of the pedals was a topic I remember from day 1 (about 4 yrs ago) I have found some shoes just don't work with the manual ... cowboy boots for example, (my lady friend with S40 says high heel suck ) my Vans are nice driving shoes w/ the 6-spd
oh btw... I'm also a US size 11 (euro size 44)

Re: How bad is the "limited footwell" issue (GaryJ)

I have a size 12 and no issues here. I actually find my car more comfortable to ride in than most others.
Edit: actually now that i think about it, sometimes i get lazy when i brake and tap the side of the gas pedal. It's not enough to accelerate but still annoying.

I'm sure I have much smaller feet than most of you and I'll admit that I find the footwell to be smaller than many other cars I've driven. The limited space doesn't present much of an issue to me, though.
Blame it on the minimalist Swedish designers!

Re: (mad matt)

Just to add...it is not too small. I have a 13 shoe and it has never been a problem. The pedals are close together, but like everything, you get used to it! Go for it!!!!
