Was sitting passenger in my car, just going along normally when all of a sudden a horrible screeching noise starts coming from my front wheel! I get out to take a look and see nothing out of the ordinary... not dragging anything, no unusual marks on the rotor or anywhere else... so I get back in and ride it out a little bit. It lasts for another block or 2 until we pull in my friends driveway. Check it out again and finally I give up and back out. It makes the sound for one last time and poof, it's gone!

Between this and the reverse braking grinding noise I'd say I've got a sick car!

Probably a small rock got caught between a brake rotor and dust shield.

Or maybe a belt slipping -- had you just gone through a puddle?

Nope no puddles or anything but the the rock might make sense. Although it sounded alot more like constant metal-to-metal contact. I had my friend drive as I walked along the side and I didn't see any sparks or anything.

+1, It's happened to me before.

Just get the wheel off and you can stick your head in the wheel well and easily see if there is a rock stuck in there on the back (inner) side of the rotor.

Re: (davidklaw)

Happened to me too awhile back...and it indeed was horrifying...

Still hadn't confirmed what it was but I was thinking about some stone getting caught some place....Never did happen again though...
