My dad's 96 T5 850 (w/ about 114k) just started making this horrible noise. When you open the door it makes this dry-firing-a-gun-like metal-on-metal noise at each of the positions where the catch thing is supposed to hold the door open. Supposedly the base of this stopper thing is almost completely broken, meaning the weld broke, but it still holds it open. This is really bizarre to me, and since I'm not a Volvo guy I'm not in the know--that and Volkswagens never break
yeah right. Anyhow, is this something that may be covered under a recall or something, or has no one ever heard of this happening? TIA

Egads!!!! I don't think door damage is common but maybe the front quarter panel needs adjustment. Sounds like the front quarter panel/front fender needs adjustment. Bring it forward and the noise should stop. You may have to align the bumper afterword, how does align on the otheer side compare? A quality body man can eliminate that problem I'm sure.

Try lubrication first off, may do the trick if it is the pivot points.
Good luck!

It sounds like the check strap on the door. This is the bar between the door and body that stops the door from opening too wide. You will need to have it welded as the weld snaps. Shouldn't be too expensive.
The second most common problems on 850's(1st being air con).
