So Magoon claimed that my friends '08 Honda Accord V6 (I posted '07 in the R forum, but it's a new gen Accord) is faster than my '07 3.2 S80. Here are some numbers:

Honda - 268 hp at 6200 rpm and 248 lb-ft of torque at 5000 rpm
Volvo - 235 hp at 6200 rpm and 236 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm

Honda Curb Weight - 3600 Lbs
Volvo Curb Weight - 3485 Lbs

So which would have a better 0 to 60 score? I'm thinking because of our car's slightly lower curb weight and torque at lower RPM's, I could possibly tie, or win a 0 to 60.

But honestly, I think its wayyyy to close to definitively call one car faster than the other (That was directed towards Magoon.

I don't know what an S80 3.2 weighs, but I'm guessing it weighs much more than 3485 lbs. While I don't believe Volvo's published curb weight figures for the S80, it still is probably heavier than a V6 Accord.

The Volvo website lists the 2009 S80 3.2 as 3,968 lbs. If you can believe it.

Hmm. I got that number (3485) off of some auto comparison site (I forgot which). It could quite possibly be that they are wrong.

The coupe V6 honda (6-speed) would absolutely spank the 3.2 S80 from 0-60. I think the coupe accord can run high 5's from 0-60.

He has the sedan with 5 speed auto, not the coupe. The coupe could obviously whoop the S80. lol.

The Accord coupe V6, Accord sedan V6, Camry V6......and even my RAV4 V6 will take your S80 in a 0-60 run. What's the point? Get over it.

Its just a discussion... There's nothing else to talk about, so we're talking about this.

Should have convinced dad to buy the V8 I guess.

either way, hes driving the Volvo and not a Honda (this defense by the way is slowly losing hold.....)

but yeah Viv those cars are fast

Honestly, I don't think Volvo's are necessarily safer than something like an Accord. They have nearly the same mass, receive similar crash test ratings, etc.

But yeah - those cars are faster. Kind of upsetting that a $25K car of the same size class is more powerful than a car that cost $20K more.

Horsepower and price have little to do with each other. There are low horsepower "premium/luxury" brands and high horsepower "mid/low" brands. And BTW, the S80 may sticker at $45K but out the door is much lower due to continued heavy incentives......so that argument goes away as well.

The Accord V6 would absolutely eat your S80 for breakfast, brunch, lunch, snack-time, dinner, and mid-night snack. Sedan, couple, auto, manual, who cares?

A Accord V6 and a S80 V8 **might** be a fair match. I'd still have trouble putting money on the S80 at that point though, too.

This is an interesting thread. To give you some background; my family had, among other cars, a total of 5 Hondas in the 20 year period from 1985 to 2005. Having said this, your 0-60 question is purely academic, IMHO. In my experience, Volvo makes a MUCH nicer car...

BTW, the 34XX pound weight figure is, in all likelihood, a S60, not S80.

True. Part of the reason I went for the S80 over the TL (an '07 - not the new fugly ones), was the build quality. The first TL we test drove rattled all over the place, and had a very plastic feel to it. The S80 felt solid and was more comfortable.

As far as the interior of a new Accord - the S80 winds hands down. The seats are horrible - they look fake and wrinkle quite easily. My friend said the driver's seat has a cooling function, but it is cooling - not ventilated (I believe it uses a peltier plate to heat/cool the seats). Bad thing about this is that when you come in after a basketball or tennis game and are all sweaty, you'd get a cold damp back vs a cool dry back. And also, if it is a peltier plate as I suspect, the rear of the seat would heat up. Conversely, it would cool down when the seat is heated in the winter.

And the console - talk about complicated. Buttons everywhere! Its so damn hard to do anything while driving. In my car, everything is consolidated and easy to adjust while moving.

Personally, I'm willing to accept the lower performance of the S80 and its higher comforts over the Accord.

you dont really think a S60 weighs more than the S80 do you? does a civic weigh more than the accord? No. so why would the smaller S60 weigh more than the S80?

3.2 4dr Front-wheel Drive Sedan
Horsepower: 235 @ 6,200 rpm
Torque: 236 @ 3,200 rpm
Transmission: 6-spd w/OD
Curb Weight: 3,825 lbs.
Fuel Type: premium unleaded

V8 4dr All-wheel Drive Sedan
Horsepower: 311 @ 5,950 rpm
Torque: 325 @ 3,950 rpm
Transmission: 6-spd w/OD
Curb Weight: 4,100 lbs.
Fuel Type: premium unleaded

both models are well over the 3400(high end) pound S60

Re: Honda Accord V6 vs 3.2 S80! (V70 Brad)

I agree 100%, from personal experience. Had an S60 (2.5T), went to an '08 Accord V6 because I thought I could get basically the same features at a much lower price point. I rued the decision almost from the start, and happily got an '09 S80 T6 a short while ago (OSD), and haven't looked back.

The Accord did seem quicker from a standstill than the S80 does (despite whatever the published figures are), probably because of the weight issue. The S80 is better at passing on the highway, presumably due to the greater available torque at lower rpms. But the S80 really kills the Accord (IMHO) in overall ride quality, particularly in ride smoothness and seat comfort.

The only thing missing from the Volvo that the Accord has is a visor that will extend all the way to the pillar when swung out to the window. As it is now, it seems to cover only about 1/2 the window, which does no good when the sun is shining through the back half of the window.

No - I always knew the 80 weighed more than the 60. Maybe I mistyped something above. My bad.
