Last night, the V70 was making a HORRIBLE grinding sound. Sounded like metal on metal, coming from the front right. But the odd thing is this: We'd just driven to a bar/restaurant maybe an hour and half previously. No issues. We pull out and head down the road (a block) and take a right. Oddly enough, it starts griding a bit right by the Volvo dealer. It goes away when the brakes apply (thought corrosion somehow?). I continue on and it gets progressively worse. Applying the brakes now lessens it, but doesn't eliminate it. So I jump out to look at what I can (10 at night) and didn't see anything. We're not far from home so I figured I'd limp her home. Thing is, it gets worse and worse and worse until I take a left turn where it starts to diminish....and then go away. And stay away. All in all, maybe for a mile worth of driving? Any ideas?
Info I can think of if any of it applies: '01 V70 T5, lots of moisture lately around here, did the front brakes and rotors (myself) about 10K ago without any issues, 94K on it. Thoughts? Also, I tried turning left and right to see if anything went away. Didn't really seem to make much of an effect....maybe slightly less noise with a turn in both directions? There was a small gravel patch by where we parked?

Ummmmmm...don't recall. I think so. If not, wouldn't that have been an issue already?

I've experienced a similar phenomenon with mine but it too went away and I have not heard it since, and that was well over a year ago.
I still have no idea what caused the noise. I was thinking perhaps a stone or something got caught up in there (if that's even possible) and then it finally fell out

Re: Holy grinding! (alstensby)

I wonder if that might be what it is. No sense in bringing it in since the noise isn't there and I'll pay $$$ to hear "Could not replicate". Ha ha! I called the local dealer and he said that they actually tend to get a car in every week or so where a rock will get caught between a plate and the backside of the rotor or something. Just seemed like a LOT more noise than that but who knows. Hopefully, that's all it was!

Re: Holy grinding! (alstensby)

I had a washers stuck in between the rotor and the shield, and the noise was unholy.
