OMG.....those... are sweet!
Really depends on what color the taillights are when he hits the brakes. Some of the CHP here would get me, due to the extensive custom work and the attention I get, but that...maybe not. Most city cops here would over look those as long as you can see the third brake light and the turn signals on the front quarter panel.
Some here in California have those: http://www.evolvecars.com/site...0,1,0
This might the guy who did them: Jon's Tinted Tails. I've seen Kelly's car in person and this is the guy who did them. Someday I see lightly tinted tails in my future.

Re: Hmmm... wonder if these are legal? (RainyS60R)

i have some spare lenses on order, and i might get them done in color-match [black sapphire metallic] by jon...
but thursday morning i decided i'd do it myself, and they turned out VERY nice. a lot better than i could have ever imagined..especially since it was my first attempt, i was expecting htem to look like crap..all orangepeeled and all...but i took my time, did it right, and polished them...
see my results in my other thread.

Re: (cloaked)

I dont think they look that great. Plus you have a liability issue if someone rear ends you. "I couldnt see his brake lights", and I could imagfe what the insurance and police officer would say.

I agree but it is illegal and it gives the wolfman a reason to pull you over even if you haven't committed a traffic violation. It's just a correctable violation or fix it ticket but it will cost you 10.00 paid to the court and possibly 15.00 to the deputies of the court or if there is a CHP office they can sign it off for free, either way it's a waste of your time.

Re: (cloaked)

It's illegal, and if you're found at fault in a crash, and your modified lenses are entered as an associated cause, your insurance company now has an out. Check your policy. Most read, the car must conform with the vehicle code.
Any modification to a lighting device is a no-no. 26101 vc comes to mind, but there are others that can apply.
26101. No person shall sell or offer for sale for use upon or as part of the equipment of a vehicle, nor shall any person use upon a vehicle, any device that is intended to modify the original design or performance of any lighting equipment, safety glazing material, or other device, unless the modifying device meets the provisions of Section 26104. This section does not apply to a taillamp or stop lamp in use on or prior to December 1, 1935, or to lamps installed on authorized emergency vehicles.
Also, there's always a chance the officer wont make it correctable. It's up to the officer. If he/she believes you knew it was illegal, but have it that way anyway, you could have to face a much higher fine.
There's my 3 cents, flame guard ON!
Tim

Re: (t6tim)

I go back and forth on whether or not I like the blackout/tinted tail lights... I think they look good on some cars bad on others...
As for the legal stuff, I personally haven't had a hard time telling when someone had their running lights or brake lights on, but if it could be an issue, I guess you need to think of it.... I have my front windows tinted, so I guess the law didn't stop me there.... I don't know what the ramifications for my windows might be...
On a side note, it looks like that guy does excellent work!!
PS> Cicada's car does look badass

If its not made correctable you only need to go to court and see the bench officer he/she can make it correctable, no biggie just time consuming and 25.00 in most cases. If you don't ack like a Jackass while being contacted by a peace officer he/she will more than likely make the cite correctable, No Flame. how about the little red face never used it before hehe

I had a 90 Nissan Hardbody that had a lot of custom work to the frame, exhaust, engine, and tented windows. I had a cop out for me in La Verne. I was pulled over once a week until I moved. Anything on the car is fixable no matter what the cop marks down.
The problem is it gets tired some after a while. You’re not allowed to fix it on the side of the road because of safety reasons. It can become a bigger problem if you swap it out in front of the cop with the spares in the truck... believe me on that one. Technically he can tow your car away if he feels it's mechanically unsafe and swapping them out in front of him only means you'll drive down the road a swap them back. You really don't want him see how you’re going to fix it.
2 of the most common fix it tickets in the past:
Front headlights below 23", Rear taillights below 27", frame below lowest part of rim: I corrected these with a Monroe Air Shock. I would just fill up the shock with an air pump and get it signed off.
Tented window's side, violation of view on the left side front (truck show stickers in the same spot as the Texas reg and inspection stickers) : I corrected the tented side windows by buying a side window from the dealer and I would swapped the passenger window. I would park on the curb and have the deputy sign it off. I pulled the drivers window out in case he asked to see that one too.... I would just say it broke in the driveway when I was clean the tent off. It was a 5 minute job for each side.

Anyways, I don't see anyone getting bothered by the taillights from my experience, because you have a third brake light... and that's not modified. I tend to look for that more in traffic more than the tail lights since the glare off the sun makes the taillights on some cars look like their braking. There is addition turn signals on our cars along the side of the car and on the mirrors on the newer models. I doubt that the people on this forum use them a 100% of the time.
The only way you'll get a ticket for this is if your caught for speeding and act like a jerk to the officer.
Re: (JARMO)

Ummm,

I was just answering the question at the beginning...it's illegal, and no, it does not take speeding to be cited for it.
If you're stopped for it you can get warned, a fix it ticket, or a non fix it ticket.
Tim
