I tried to clean her up a bit (as best as a guy can do with a broken hip), and here is how she turned out:

As you can see here, she needs a new paint job.

Interior was redone in cloth a couple of years ago by the original owner's nephew. I will eventually redo the interior with leather, as that was the original equipment.

The car came with a whole host of documentation, including the original owner's booklet, including the owner's manual, warranty and service records booklet, some "driving tips" brochure, and an accessories brochure.

All the services are documented through the 30K in the orginal manual. Beyond that, there are yearly state inspection receipts that document the mileage pretty much up to present day, which provides strong support for the current miles on the odometer being the actual original miles on the car:

So all in all, I think it's a pretty good start for a vintage project car/daily driver. Biggest problem I've got now is the BW35 (rebuilt in 04) is leaking fluid like crazy, so I've got to fix that before I start driving the vehicle all over the place. Anyways, just wanted to share my new ride with you all!

The nephew said that it was pretty darn close to the factory color though. I haven't had a chance to look at the plate to see what the paint and interior codes are (and even if I did, I don't know where I'd go to decode them). I am planning on repainting it in a Volvo color as close to original as possible. Is the Sapphire Blue a light metallic blue?

Re: (Copeland)

Thank you sir! I'm not really doing much more than tinkering at this point. Once I start feeling better, I'll get more serious.

Re: Here she is! (R Salesman)

Very nice. Our first volvo was a 1974 164E like yours-- metallic blue. Ours had blue leather (your interior was redone, correct?) and the (apparently rare) sunroof option. I've been keeping my eyes open for that combo w/ a sunroof and the closest I found was a blue/beige about a year ago.
You have quite a find! Keep us posted with your progress.

Ah... The memories.
I've had a few 140 series ('69 144, '72 142E, '74 144), but never a 16X.
Always wanted one, though. But, I outgrew that.
I can't believe the 57K miles! My vehicles had well over 250K miles before trading it in. And, that was decades ago!
Any dashboard cracks? Brakes okay?
Check for lotso rust in the trunk sides, under the carpet. Make sure the plugs drain.
Looks to be a awesome project.
regards,
MAJ

Re: Here she is! (R Salesman)

I had two 75 164s when I was in college: the second had a sunroof and a manual transmission, and my plan was to do a manual swap, as this car developed the dreaded FI controller problem.
The one I drove daily was the same color as yours. Eventually, the grossly inadequate BW35 gave up the ghost (as they all do -- after all, this was the same trans used in the auto 140s, and so were not meant to handle the six's torque). After the rebuild, I found that it would leak like crazy if the car were parked on an uneven surface. There was, I understand, a vent that caused this, though I never looked into this, as the FI controller eventually went on this car before the trans ever became an issue again.
Does the speedo work consistently? I recall that mine was somewhat intermittent, resulting in an incorrect ODO reading.
Looks clean, though. Good platform for a restoration. Perhaps a manual swap is in your future? They are vastly different cars set up this way.
Re: Here she is! (t5mmmm)

Yes, the speedo works consistently. Even the tach works well.
I'm definitely going to do a manual conversion sometime in the future. I'll most likely do a T5, but that's going to be pricey.

It's close, but not quite. The Sonic is definitely a deeper blue. In person, this is more of a metallic Robin's egg blue. I really like it -- I think it's a cool retro color.

Congratulations!, very nice, I didn't see the history of her. Is she a Carolina native? Coming from the frigid, salty north the Carolina cars are a treat. Three of my northern Volvos rusted before they mechanically died.

Re: (ncvolvobob)

Yep, it's a NC car. The exact town is escaping my mind at the moment, but it was purchased and operated here for quite some time.

Nice ride, Lee. I can't believe how straight the side body panels are. I couldn't see and ripples or door dings in the photos you provided.
I hope it drives as nice as it looks!

Great car!
If it were mine I would keep it Volvo with a fresh M410 tranny.
You'll want to wait till your hip is better before you get into that.
Don't give up on the D-jet system. There's help here and on the Brickboard. Components ARE available!
