i posted before about this, but a noise in my MT 05 S60R had developed that i thought was coming from the steering column. it only happened when i was accelerating, and it sounded like the noise a leaf makes when blowing across the grass. a somewhat quiet scraping. happened every time i accelerated.
at the 15,000 mile service last week, i told them about it. they told me all they did was lube the steering column. well as i drove off, it wasnt there.
the next day, and the last two weeks, it was back.
so i dropped it off today.
they took the glass off in front of the dash bezel, thinking that maybe the four screws there needed tightening.
well, they would have if the four screws were even there! apparently there were NO screws in the cluster behind the dash. could have been worse, i guess.

Not knowing about that area of the car too well that sure seems like a good find for a service department.

I agree the tech is to be applauded for tracking down something this obscure. KUDOS to him!
Had there been work done previously to the car that would have involved the removal, and then the screws not get replaced or is this a QC error from the factory?

Re: here is a new one - irritating noise fixed (rogersampson)

the service manager said it must have been a holiday in sweden the day they were supposed to install the screws. no work done previously. QC issue all the way....
i have had nothing but pleasant experience with the service department here in ohio. of course, i have had nothing but a pleasant experience with my R so far as well. (knock on wood).
i agree. i was impressed that they figured it out.

Why didn;t they just replace the steering column bushing?
In 850's and V70's they start to squeak and groan after a few years as the bushings go bad. Knowning Volvo and their logic, it seems to reason that the P2 cars probably have a similar setup and your column has a premature bushing failure.
Lubbing these is only a temporary fix, a new column bushing is probably in order for your car
