Ever since I've had my 07R (since Jan), I've had a funky smell from the ventilation system. When first turning on the AC, it's even worse.
Kinda reminds me of the 8th grade gym locker I had way-back-when.
Any recommendations?
p.s. I asked John at BVV about replacing the charcoal filter, and he thought that would not help. He had two recommendations: a spray for the dash vents and/or a liquid air freshener that you pour into your windshield washer fluid (with each use a whiff gets into the outside vents). Seems to me this is treating the symptoms and not the cause.

If I remember, the filter is changed every 15K.

When it first appeared I thought I had forgotten to take my shower in the morning, but I soon found out it was mold and bacterial buildup in the AC System. Very common in all cars with AC.
I called Volvo and they told me to bring it in. They did an AC cleaning service covered under warranty.

Does it smell kinda like vinegar?
And isn't afterblow enabled by default? Or did they stop using it in later MYs?
EDIT: Found my answer from the full TNN

Quote »

NOTE: Up through 2002 Afterblow was activated from the factory, 2003 and later Afterblow
will be Retailer activated only.

Quote »

TNN87-53-2005-11-21 Title: Air Conditioning, 'Afterblow' Function.
Under certain conditions, customers may complain about a musty odor from the A/C system. Re: (dave_n_ruth)

Just got my afterblow enable in my R couple weeks ago (finaly!) Did not have to do any cleaning. Just had to use the A/C and leave it on and after about two weeks the smell is TOTALLY gone No cleaning was required (and I still have the original cabin filter at 50K Km).
Yes, it was a vinager-like smell.
LTA
Re: Help with Funky smell from AC (bingo1)

1) You can turn on afterblow
2) Open all your windows and crank up the heater to max heat and max speed, and let it run for, oh, say 20 minutes. That will kill most bacteria/mold/etc. in the system. Then see if the smell is still there.
